Very strong start to the album, but lost me at some point and was bored by the end.

Listened to this album a lot when it was new, but not in the last maybe 20 years. It seems I still like it, and I still know almost all the lyrics. Though the music seems to be "simple" and there is only limited use of musical instruments, the music appears somehow "rich" to me. The a cappella track "Behind the Wall" is one of my highlights. Not a single filler on the album.
Great folk-pop album, great voice and great song-writting. It's too rare nowadays to have pop music with such meaningful lyrics. The stripped down songs are the best (hell, Behind the Wall shows that she doesn't need additional instruments), the others are a bit too overproduced (welcome to the '80s I guess).
My wife had this album on cassette when we first met. Brought back some good memories.
I know the singles off this album but I don’t think I’ve listened to the album before. I remember thinking that this was sort of easy-listening, but it is actually quite tough going in places with some justifiably angry lyrics about poverty and racial injustice. Reminiscent of singer songwriters from the 60s, but with a definite 80s polish in the sound quality.
I love Tracy Chapman and this album is actually great. There are some songs that especially stand out, like "Talkin' Bout a Revolution", "Fast Car" and of course "Baby Can I Hold You", but many of the other tracks are just as worthy a listen. Except "Behind the Wall", despite the important message behind the lyrics. The song wasn't really a good a capella candidate, in my opinion.
Fantastic album, timeless lyrics and music
Poetic and delicate.
Only knew the singles, the rest is not as good. Great voice though
It’s really not my music. But it’s great song IF you want to listen only 1-2 songs. Maybe I’m so broke, but this cycling and recycling of 3 to 5 chords through the songs makes the album monotonous for me. Some songs seem to run for 30 minutes, even if it’s just 2-3 minutes. She has a nice voice and there are some good melodies, but I don’t want to listen this album ever again in one sitting.
Immediately recognisable signature voice,
I know Tracy Chapman and I know this album. I thought I knew the whole album pretty well but the last three songs did not seem familiar at all. They don’t really do it for me. Funny enough those are the ones that are more run of the mill love song lyrics and not the poignant society critical songs as the other songs on the album. I do like her voice and most of her song writing. Apparently not enough that I kept up with the rest of her work. Sure, I know a couple more songs of hers, it just doesn’t do it enough for me, to want to listen to all her albums and I’m usually good after listening to a couple songs at a time. So, I just read that a white country guy covered her song ‘Fast Car’ aaaand it’s exactly how she sings it including the part about working in the supermarket as a checkout girl. It just sounds and feels wrong. Yeah, nope.
Always loved this one. Tracy Chapman has a beautiful voice and the sparse music accompaniment really works here. It makes everything feel immediate and raw and somewhat old school.
I liked this album! I think she has a great voice. Very soothing. I liked the lyrics a lot too. With a few of the songs I felt transported into her world. Great discovery for me, for sure!
This is definitely not my cup of tea - so forgive me my rating. Tracy has a charismatic voice and at the time the songs at least stood out of the usual chart shit. Still nothing I would listen to again - and to be honest I didn't listen to the full album, just did short a recap of the hit singles ...
Meh not my style.
Fast Car is such an incredibly perfect song. The rest of the album is quite good too, though it’s not something I can see putting on often.
