fIREHOSEDamn what the fuck? I thought this would be some grunge/punk screaming band from the name, but it is exactly in my taste of music and is really really good. How'd I not know about them before?

I went into this one loving the album, but I listened to it for really the first time through a critic's lens and I am torn between 4 and 5 stars. I think it is definitely my favorite one so far, but I don't know if it is the complete top top of my ranking system. I think it is a 4/5 among my favorite albums and the albums I listen to, but it is probably a 5/5 with random albums, so I think I have to give it the full 5 stars. From the get-go, the driving funk bass with random piano and guitar riffs is really cool, and the tempo changes driven by the drums throughout are so well done. David Byrne also has one of my favorite voices ever because he makes screaming sound good. The back half with a lineup of The Book I Read, Government, First Week, fucking psycho killer, AND pulled up is truly an incredible stretch, and the album takes me back to dancing with my family in the living room, rediscovering it in high school, and my brother screaming Talking Heads lyrics at me throughout #TinaWeymouthStanClub
First half was better than second half. Forget Her and Hallelujiah slap
I was going back and forth between giving this 3 and 4 stars, but I ended up giving it 4 because that's what I did with Jeff Buckley and I think I enjoyed the two albums about the same. I honestly enjoyed BSSM more than I thought I would, seeing as my main exposure to RHCP was Californication and I only liked some of the songs off it. There were definitely some better parts (the beginning especially had crisp transitions and was absolutely solid) and some parts that seemed to drag a little (the songs between Under The Bridge and Sir Psycho Sexy are very forgettable), but ultimately I like it a lot just because of the sexy distorted slap bass that made you say umph (looking at you minute 1:58 of Power of Equality). Favorites: If you have to ask, under the bridge, I could have lied Least favorites: Apache rose peacock, suck my kiss Other notes - Crisp production overall - Funky Monks is a jam and the "crudeness" of the bass/guitar at the beginning reminds me of The Violent Femmes - Under the Bridge is objectively really good - Sir Psycho Sexy is kinda weird but I like the atmosphere it creates - wtf is up with some of the names on this album (and the album itself) - Breaking the girl sounds like that one Christmas song We Three Kings lmao
I liked this one a lot more than I expected to again. The beginning was a little slow and I wasn't sure about it, but the background piano in Half Moon and Buried Alive in the Blues was really cool. Blues scales in general sound really good if they're done right, and this was definitely done right. Honestly I'd give all 3 albums so far a 3.5/5, which might be saying something about me? Idk. I gave both of them a 4, so I guess I'm rounding up
I liked this album a lot too, but I said would be a little harsher with my grading. I loved a lot of the instrumentals because they almost reminded me of the bastard child of Pink Floyd and Dave Brubank, which was super interesting. The general atmospheric vibe to the album was also really neat and the different flowinesses of the different instruments was well done. Like a lot of jazz, you do really have to be in the right mood for it. There's a lot of repetition (or near-repetition that only the performers and someone paying really close attention can hear) and 45 minutes of the lowfi feel can get a little annoying. Overall pretty good though
I absolutely loved the first song - that's going straight on multiple of my playlists. After that, though, it fell off pretty fast. I actually really liked the high pitched singing in the middle of the album, but altogether it kind of blurred together over the back half of the album. That being said, I overall really liked it (and that first song gets it at least 3 on its own).
Honestly eh. I thought I'd like it more but it just did not hit as hard as Rush, Iron Maiden, or other prog/hard rock bands. Some parts were really good but others just yelled about the wizard that will kill you with his magic (Rush would talk about the nuances and intricacies of the magic and how it's a microcosm for the entire human race, but this didn't really elaborate AT ALL). It just didn't really do it for me
Another one I'm not too fond of, mostly because I don't know how to feel about it. Korn somehow makes a 4.5 minute song feel like a 9 minute song, and I'm not sure if that's good or not. The guy also really wants to be a guitar with metal skatting? idk if it works but just imaging them recording it in a studio is hilarious to me The album cover slaps though
I mean it was decent but all the songs sounded the same Sounded like ABBA and Fleetwood Mac but worse Sax was pretty cool in some of the songs though
