Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music
Ray Charles
I feel relaxed and happy because of ray's voice, despite the fact he's singing about losing a lover and wanting to die?
I don't hear much western, but its got a healthy mix of country, swing, and blues - later note, maybe I'm thinking of the wild west genre and there was a different name for this that we either lost or changed?
His voice is amazing and smooth
Prime example of some of the best that the black community has brought to the table for music. Really genuine emotion in the singing
I can't shake the feeling of christmas music in all of this...

Highway 61 Revisited
Bob Dylan
I struggle to understand if I love or hate so much of Dylan's work. I have mixed feelings about his voice, the use of the harmonica, the instrumentals are great but often get grating and can quickly overstay their welcome. Despite the complaints, there are a lot of high points. When he hits a good note or fun tune it sounds amazing, I just wish he could keep a hold onto that gold when he gets it.
His voice is so distinct, its hard to find anyone else who comes close to Dylan's inflection and drawl. That unique sound really helps him stand out and stick into my mind, maybe even enough to be seen as someone with skill as a vocalist.
I really appreciate the folk vibes, the telling of some sort of story that you missed the beginning of. Gives it an odd, not otherworldly, but foreign feel and makes you hold onto the singers words.
The instrumentals are really good and I have respect for the band that's able to make such a good folk/country/rock song. However, they need to take that fukin harmonica away from them, same for the whistle from highway 61.
My feelings on the harmonica have changed once I got to Tom Thumb's Blues, a little whinny at high pitches, but that's a fault of the instrument and not so much the band I suppose.
I really, really like desolation row, the length makes it hard to listen for the whole 11< minutes but that's just because my attention doesn't last that long for songs. They do their damnedest to keep me on board though and it has some of the most genuine singing from Dylan, and that fucking harmonica, that I've ever heard along side like a rolling stone.

The Last Broadcast
Doves
This one is gonna be quick because I feel like shit, but I loved this artist. I always loved the strange vibes from radiohead that i haven't heard anywhere else. I couldn't listen to them too much though because it was filled with so much anxiety and depressive sounds that it brought me down. The doves have that vibe I wanted though, and it had all of the bad vibes taken out. A wonderful, modern, almost whimsical or fairytale like album
8.5/10 The only descriptor in my head is "modern fairytale"

The Gershwin Songbook
Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald's voice is completely unmatched. She has such a wide range that she freely travels. And yet nothing is overdone, her voice works right along side the music.
The instrumental is wonderful as well, the violins help give a very whimsical sound. The songs are very relaxing and pleasant, its hard to be in a bad mood listening to this album.
Each individual instrument (and Ella) would sound great even isolated from the rest of the song. When its all brought together it feels like everything just harmonizes.
As much as I like this artist, its just not something I could listen to on my personal playlists. The style is just not something id listen to at any time in the real world and it can't fit with the other artists I listen to. Its not just unique, but its out of place outside of its era.
8/10 Incredible talent from everyone involved but its as much as I could give for an album I wont listen to in my own time.
