1001 Albums Summary

Reminds me of knitting in half light on a spooky December afternoon with the decorations from Halloween still up. If I have one criticism, I wish they sang in a Scandinavian accent rather than one from the deep south.

Horrible. I'm guessing the distortion is intentional but it's virtually unlistenable.

I'm not sure the production style suits John Martyn, but his vocals are as good as ever and there's no denying the emotional impact of the songs. But it's great that he was trying new sounds and recorded the album despite the turmoil he was in.

Perfect for the dancefloor, a few ballads vary the tempo. Happy music for happy times

It's well intentioned and skilfully played rock music. Vocally, they sound a LOT like REM. All in all, this is a decent effort with a cool album cover for extra kudos.

A sprightly collection of world music rhythms that's cheerfully played and passionately sung. Another fine selection, most likely to get served at your hip neighbour's cocktail party.

I really enjoyed this fresh sounding album with great production, instrumentation, quirkiness and plenty of variety. The laissez faire vocal style suits the songs and whilst it's not really in the timeless music category, it is a wholly satisfying listen, pushing it into the 5 star category.

I enjoyed the modern production style and general quirkiness that shows a lot of imagination, which is commendable. But at times this makes it, shall we say, a challenging listen.

They've got a sound that's very typical of the mid nineties alternative rock style. It's competent well produced music but something doesn't quite gel and it's difficult to say why. Just not my bag maybe?

Full of exotic tribal rhythms, spacey keyboards and bubbling deep bass lines, this is a fascinating tapestry of rich sounds. It's a wonderful fusion of hypnotic world music and cinematic Pink Floyd-esque soundscapes. Really good stuff and deserving of a place in the actual list.

Some fine dance pop music. Not really my thing but I gave it a go.
