This album is one of my absolute favorites of all time by my favorite band of all time, Cake. It’s so underrated, it’s a crime! I personally think it’s their second best album behind 2001's Comfort Eagle, but it was more important historically because it had their biggest hits from the 90s and helped build their fanbase (not including Motorcade of Generosity). 5 stars instantly.

I wish that an autocrat law-ignoring regime would do something cool for once. Like making everyone take some time each day to remember that CAKE kicks ass

This alternative rock album by Cake contains the successful singles "The Distance" and "I Will Survive". The rest of the album is not bad either. Funny lyrics and good guitar (and horn) performances. The songs that are covers really add something to the original versions.

I had the singles of The Distance and I Will Survive as a kid at the time, but never got the album. It's as good as I expected. A unique and lovely thing

This is a classic, and it's strange it is not on the original list.

Like most CAKE albums for me, it has highs and lows. It is ecletic in topic and delivery and varies enough that keeps it constantly interesting. When it works, it really works, but there are definitely a few passes (e.g. Race Car Ya-yas), but i am all onboard and embrace the adventure. I love "Friend", "The Distance" and their "I Will Survive" cover.

I have very fond memories of a specific concert at Red Rocks with De La Soul, Flaming Lips, and Cake. I was there to see Cake. The others are on the main list, this should have been too. Great suggestion and I'm enjoying revisiting Fashion Nugget this morning.

This one has been underrated, or worse, ignored by so many "professional critics" for so long, it's simply one of the most outrageous case of musical talent not being recognized fairly. From opener "Frank Sinatra" to that Willie Nelson cover at the end of the tracklist, this album oozes with fun, groove, catchy melodies, witty lyrics, off-kilter instrumentation and, most importantly, instant charm. "The Distance", "Friend Is a Four Letter Word", "Open Book", "Daria", "It's Coming Down"... So many memorable and endearing tunes in there. This collection of songs is just perfect, and the fistful of tongue-in-cheek covers sprinkled among them ("I Will Survive", "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps"...) is just a riot. Each and every person I know who is aware of this album simply loves it. So, clearly, I can't see why allmusic and the likes are unable to recognize *Fashion Nugget* for the nineties masterpiece that it is. One that hasn't aged a day, to boot (Cake were too much their own thing to follow the trends of the day, and this paid off an incredible amount of dividends on this LP in the long run). This needed to be added to the users list, period. And in a sense, nostalgia makes this one sound even better and timeless today, if that makes sense. An album which starts with the following lines down there can only elicit the most heartfelt responses, because it's as if the performer singing that song had finally equalled his avowed model on the radio and joined him to croon to all the animals under the starry night sky. "We know of an ancient radiation That haunts dismembered constellations A faintly glimmering radio station While Frank Sinatra sings Stormy Weather The flies and spiders get along together Cobwebs fall on an old skipping record..." Great music can produce this kind of miracle, right? All you need is a good tune and poetic imagery like that. So here's me hoping that the first thing aliens living hundreds of light years away hear from earth is this song. They would hear many horrible things about us afterwards (musical or otherwise). But at least, with a start like that, maybe they'll remember we're not *totally* hopeless... Number of albums from the original list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 465 Albums from the original list I *might* include in mine later on: 288 Albums from the original list I won't include in mine: 336 ---- Number of albums from the users list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 25 (including this one) Albums from the users list I *might* select for mine later on: 35 Albums from the users list I won't select for mine: 66 --- Émile, j'ai mis ma dernière réponse sous l'album de The 1975 au dessus...

I recall hearing a ton of this when it was huge, I don't think I ever owned it. I think this is great musically. Lyrically clever and with a winning flow but is there much any substance there? Still if it's all style it's pretty impeccable styles. The covers don't do a lot for me, and bunch of dudes belting out female power anthem I Will Survive is particularly meh.

I last listened to this before I saw cake live last year and I honestly don’t feel like I need to relisten quite yet. It’s not great but the distance is just *so* good man.

Probably my favorite CAKE album, given how well the deadpan lyrics, ska influences/horns, and general funkiness all come together. It’s a shame folks usually don’t listen beyond ‘The Distance’ given how creative and fun the band has made their little musical niche – while there’s definitely a sense of self-importance that starts to grate over the 50-minute runtime, you can’t deny how off-the-cuff and genuine the whole thing feels.

Enjoyed this one, never heard them before I don’t think but obviously recognised the covers. I liked their take on the songs. One I’ll hopefully come back to.

One of the first albums I (allegedly) torrented - but one I have not listened to in 20+ years. So weird, and such a fun listen, that I was glad to put that right.

CAKE are a really fun band who put out consistently pretty good albums without ever really having a great album in my opinion - all the ones I’ve heard sit kind of between a 3 and a 4, with Comfort Eagle being my favourite and Fashion Nugget right here being a close second. They just have an impressive knack for writing these really catchy songs that have a bit of a Weezer or Spoon or Beck vibe to them but really are just quite identifiably CAKE - I can’t think of another band who could cook up a song quite like The Distance and make it work so well, but there we go

A solid 90s alternative album with a classic song with the distance. But the album as a whole isn’t that great. The I will survive cover is an interesting addition that falls flat. The album starts strong but fades out pretty lazily and makes you want to go back to the beginning. Overall it’s alright. 6.3/10

These guys are like RHCP, but instead of doing black tar heroin, they all had comically oversized lollipops and propeller hats. It's good.

This is a lot of fun. Creative and irreverent without feeling overly ironic. The mix of styles is just crazy and shouldn't work at all, but it does. Fave Songs: The Distance; Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps; Frank Sinatra, Stickshifts and Safetybelts; She'll Come Back to Me; Italian Leather Sofa

Some good tunes on here, but when the second biggest song is a slightly different version of the original... sigh. It's a good rendition, but I would have expected more.

Yeah I can't get on with Fashion Nugget, it's that obnoxious brand of indie rock that seems to hate itself or revel in being ironic, the vocal style is really annoying, show that you care ffs, it's so dull, not even laid back, and the rest of it is so shallow and lacking substance that I struggle to want to listen. There's a fucking terrible cover of I Will Survive in there to top off the 1/5.
