Cannot be denied pleasantness, cannot be awarded greatness. Neat production without mastery of vision; the album wants to be generous but fails to commit or transcend towards firm realisation, be it psyche/grandiosity/bluesy. Good enough songs, but no particularly honest one.
Beautifully, carefully crafted album. EJ offers nothing less than his fullest capabilities, although inspiration seems to taper off during the second half. There remain impeccable, brilliant songs such as Tiny Dancer, Levon, Madman Across the Water or Indian Sunset.
I can see the value of it all but cannot get that much into it myself. Robert Plant's singing mannerisms get old quickly and the lyrics are subpar at best. There's no denying the production value or the honest fun of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Dazed and Confused and Communication Breakdown, but the whole album gives too much away of its unauthentic, laboratory-formulaic structure. No soul or sparks here.
Top, inventive & charming. Songs progress incredibly well and the whole album avoids repetitions. Riffs are surprisingly catchy and the overarching unpolished production makes it a superbly endearing album. Can see how Morrissey's singing could rebuke some, but there's no getting around it if you want to get into the album. Great writing, great album. Much better than their later crap. Still don't really get why I was so into this album as a teenager.
Decent album if you're into that sort of thing. Inventive guitar work.
