Excellent album, I love her unique voice. All of the songs are good.
Simple music and easy to listen to, but I'm not sure he's actually singing though - mostly sounds like he's just talking and perhaps trying to sing. I think the closest he gets to actually singing is in track 5 "Seems So Long Ago, Nancy". I've heard that he does better in some of his later albums - but I'm not going to rush and find out.
I could tell from the first song that this was a cut above the rest, and deserves to be in the 1001 list. The first three tracks are like a breath of fresh air - real effort has been put into the music and mix of instruments. Isaac Heyes has got a singing voice that makes you want to hear more. It's not all great though because I don't like the spoken intro on track 4 "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". The talking drags on for about 9min of the 18min track. Also the rest of the song is just not good enough to justify listening to 9min of talking. And I definatly don't like interviews on an album (track 7). Would I buy it - probably not - too much talking.
I'm just starting my 1001 journey and up till now I have felt the bar has been set very low. For me, I wouldn't expect your standard meat and three veg to be good enough to make the list. I'm looking for something that stands out. For the most part this album deserves to be on the list, and is an album I would buy. I will certainly be checking out Kelela's other albums.
Even Dando's voice is rather bland and nothing special, and the music is pretty much the same from song to song - with a few exceptions. Track 13 Mrs Robinson - best track on the album. Track 14 Shaky Ground - Short but enjoyable. Throw the rest of the album away and keep Mrs Robinson!
Its just not engaging, his voice is quite average and bland and really most of the album put me to sleep. The only song that I enjoyed was track 2 "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is To Be High) Track 1 (Argument with David Rawlings Concerning Morrisy) - Shouldn't be on the album, its just rubbish. I can enjoy sleepy slow songs but his voice isn't engaging enough - unless the intention of the album is to help the listener get to sleep - but it even fails at that because of Track 1 - wtf, and track 2 just wakes you up.
Easy listening.
Absolutely awful.
