Guitar heavy album. Reminds me of 2pac and early hip hop stuff, but coming from rock side. Anthony Kiedis’ voice is very carefree. Very expressive in an assured fashion. The guitar (John Frusciante) is the redeeming quality of the album because otherwise the hooks in the songs are pretty weak. The lyrics don’t always make sense and work. He does have a distinct voice. It’s imposing in a good way. In a way I could tell they are inspired by the Smiths in the way the music just carries on in the background and Anthoy just carries on singing on a different wave (Emit Remmus). The bass on this album is also a work of art. The guitar and base have incredible harmony and coordination. The album does flow very quick. Always something happening. The album also shows you where rock music has stagnated right before The Strokes came to change everything. The lyrics are straight up absurd sometimes. Overall I feel like they are trying to get something going but this is ultimately their creative limit in this particular style. Only at about 4 or 5 times in the album does it all click together. yea its weird how even though they have a very workable voice, a great guitar and bass they still cant grab me. californication the highest rated song at 7.5. this is definitely an album to play on backgroun when driving someone around. but its barely even good enough for that.
