I haven't really listened to much blues before this album, but I really feel like I should listen to more. You can hear the sounds that influenced so many other bands, and it's a fun album all the way through, even the softer songs are just really rock solid. Muddy's voice rings loud and clear throughout all the songs but never seems to drown out the rest of the band, and he seems so cool throughout the entire performance. It's a very high quality recording as well for how old it is. I like this album a lot.
Favorite Tracks: Tiger In Your Tank, I Feel So Good, Got My Mojo Working Pt. 2, Goodbye Newport Blues
This isn't my normal style of music, but I can tell why Fats is legendary. In the music, most of the instruments feels like they have their moment to shine. Fats' voice is very inviting and warm, leading you along an easy and fun listen. Chicago jazz and blues in the 50's and 60's was definitely a defining time for music, and Fats was no small part of that. His piano playing just tops it all off too.
Favorite Tracks: Blueberry Hill, So Long, La La
I didn't know really any of Jerry's music other than Great Balls Of Fire before this album. He's got a really good lower register, but likes to do a lot of really interesting higher register things and falsettos which keep it interesting. His piano playing is just insane, plus the fact he's singing on top of it shows talent that is just levels above so many others. This album is a really interesting look into where it feels like swing and rockabilly really started transforming into rock and roll, and Jerry Lee Lewis plays both sides of that line very very well.
Favorite Tracks: Great Balls Of Fire (of course), Good Golly Miss Molly, Long Tall Sally
Holy shit. I've only listened to some of Bowie's most famous songs before this album and I have been missing out. From front to back, this album is emotional, beautiful, thoughtful, entertaining, fun to listen to, and unique. This is an album I will definitely be back to multiple times. I might've found a new favorite artist.
Favorite Tracks: Changes, Life on Mars?, Quicksand, Andy Warhol, Song for Bob Dylan, pretty much the only track that didn't wow me immediately was Kooks.
I'm not sure how to feel about this album. The good is really good, but there's a chunk of weird and experimental stuff that doesn't always work. Not that I'm against pushing the envelope so to speak, I really like some music I would consider very weird and experimental. I just don't know if most of it worked or even sounded good. I don't think the Beatles are any better by Wild Honey Pie or Why Don't We Do It In The Road existing. Savoy Truffle is pretty good from a musical standpoint, I don't think I understand the lyrics, or maybe they're meant to be just plain odd. Revolution 9 feels like I'm undergoing an experiment and drifiting in and out of sleep while the words "number nine" are being played through speakers constantly to see how it affects my brain waves and my dreams. It definitely is different and I would consider it a good different, but also feels like it might give me nightmares. This album opened my eyes to some good Beatles songs I didn't know existed, but it also left me asking "why?" and "what the fuck am I listening to?" more than I would have hoped. I definitely will come back to listen to some of these songs again, but the album as a whole I will probably not.
Favorite Tracks: Back In The U.S.S.R., Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Birthday, Helter Skelter
Nevermind is such a fun album. It's raw, emotional, loud, and catchy. Kurt's voice is perfect for the style, and all the instruments play well together, but they never feel too simple or boring and all are interesting to listen to. This is a great grunge album and is a perfect starting point for people looking to get into grunge, but also one at the top of the totem pole.
Favorite Tracks: Smells Like Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Lithium, Territorial Pissings, Something In The Way
This album was.... ok? There was just nothing that really stuck out to me. It's not bad, but other than one or two songs I can't say I "liked" this album. It's a little all over the place musically, but somehow it all still feels like it kind of blends together. There are some moments that make me think I might like some of his other works better, but this album isn't one I plan on coming back to, maybe just for one or two songs. In a word, Meh.
Favorite Tracks: Solsbury Hill, Down The Dolce Vita, Here Comes The Flood
Stevie Wonder is a great singer and piano player. That being said, I really wish there was more funky stuff on this album. I really liked Superstition, and the rest is ok, but overall kind of bland. I'd like it better if there were more funky jazzy stuff.
Favorite Tracks: Superstition, Maybe Your Baby, if I had to pick a third then Tuesday Heartbreak
I have mixed feelings about this album. Kathleen's voice isn't my favorite and sounds very poppy at times (I think it's just the way her voice sounds, nothing against her), but there is a lot of fun things musically: electronic influence, angry guitars, some very charged lyrics. I just wish I liked her voice more. Still a pretty good album.
Favorite Tracks: The the Empty, Phanta, Slideshow at Free University
I really like this album. I like how it's more vocals focused, and the darker instrumentals help set the tone. The lyrics hit hard, and it's angry but catchy and really well made. It's not something I would've tried to seek out on my own, but I feel like that is a mistake on my part.
Favorite Tracks: Dress, Sheela-Na-Gig, Plants and Rags, Water
This is my first two on the list so far. I understand why it would have appeal, but a movie soundtrack without the movie is so dull to me. Most of the songs go on for so long while just repeating the same musical phrase over and over and over without any new chords or anything to change it up and keep my ears from tuning out. There are some very pretty moments and some parts that I like, but overall this is an album I just did not like.
Favorite Tracks: Grounds For Divorce, The Fix, and the first three-ish minutes of One Day Like This
I don't listen to a ton of rap, but I liked this album. The beats were unique, her flow is interesting and keeps you listening, she has some intersting lyrics and some clever bars. There is still a lot of classic rap lyrics about how she's the best and nobody can fuck with her, stuff like that. Those are fine, just not my favorite. Overall it's pretty good, but I don't think it's different enough for me to want to listen to more of her stuff.
Favorite Tracks: Wounds, Venom, 101 FM
I was really impressed by this album. Sam interacts with the crowd a lot more than I was expecting, and is very charismatic and seems to be having a good time. He feels like he can sing all of his songs effortlessly, and still be energetic the entire time. I really like his voice, and his songs are fun and entertaining.
Favorite Tracks: Chain Gang, Cupid, Somebody Have Mercy
