1001 Albums Summary

The sound/style was very consistent all throughout. I wonder if this is to be expected with older albums due to the limitations of technology. Not stylistically, but recording-wise. But I'm probably underestimating what can be done. The style didn't mesh too well with me; that combined with the consistency of that sound throughout left me thinking "Eh. Was fine, won't listen again." If it were playing at a party, I wouldn't complain. Good album for that. Lol.

Such a fun and creative project. Not something I would normally listen to but the creativity of all the sounds and recording techniques were so interesting. I could imagine the band having a lot of fun recording this - a lot of "Hey let's try this", or "hey what if we" and each time they're all like "hell yeah let's try it". I'm familiar with these techniques in modern music (like lfo panning), so to hear it done in an older project is really cool. And how tf did they do their drums.

Would have rather listened to shoegaze. Bono sings like. He just ran a mile. That saturated chorus effect they keep using, blah, blah, no, stop. Every element of production was underwhelming in almost every song. Everything was soft, nothing stood out. Nothing was memorable other than the popular mysterious ways, but maybe that's only because I'm already familiar with it. I wasn't upset at it, I just was... quite disinterested. And disappointed.

don't hate it. don't like it. boring. like a messier lumineers. I appreciate the occasional gritty singing and angst. But something about it just... didn't feel right. It all felt blended through the mess yet still not cohesive.

I liked the energy and chaotic-ness of the instrumentals in some of the tracks. I would have liked if the singer amped up his angst a bit on those. Needed some at the drive in level delivery. The slower ones didn't do much for me. I wouldn't come back to this project as not enough resonated with me, but I did enjoy a good chunk of the instrumentals - unfortunately the vocalist didn't fit what I needed to match those instrumentals.

Easy-listening. Relaxing. Sounds like something that could have influenced Norah Jones. But I'd rather listen to her. Or Otis Redding. Her pronunciation of some words slightly irked me. But for sure feels like the "sound of an era". Something quite defining. Just not for me.
