Didn't know a ton about Frank Ocean prior to this. Good chill jazzy funky style. 1996 me would really enjoy this. Modern spin on D'Angelo + Usher + minor Prince vibes. Thinking Bout You was good and think I had heard it before. I liked the jazzy rap songs more than the more R&B-ish ones, but that's just my personal taste shining through. Honestly not really sure why it is on the 1001 list besides being probably a shining star of originality in the year it was released.
The Bottle was the one semi alright one for me. I'm not a big blues listener, but I can see where some would see a few tracks as super early inspiration for albums that came out 10-15 years later. The backing music was more enjoyable than the vocals to me. Some decent poetry in the lyrics though.
Mostly super early punk-ish tracks. I kinda liked Stephanie Says as it felt more like inspiration for Weezer or early Fountains of Wayne, so it was more my style. Overall nothing I would listen to again but fine for what it was representative of at the time it was released
I do not remember this from last 2000's. Sounds very much like Arctic Monkeys. -- Oh ha, googled them and they are an English supergroup with Arctic Monkeys lead singer, so makes sense. I mean I guess it is a modern group trying to sound like the Monkees vibe a bit? Not really my thing but 2 stars for originality
Nope. Just nope. Nada. Nope.
So good. Joplin vocals are on point. Classic jam band + blues-y feel. The good tracks are great. The filler tracks are not bad. I bet this sounded amazing live.
Was good background coding music for the day. Nothing really stood out besides the one popular song. At the same time I enjoyed listening to it.
Jazzy bluesy. Good background music. Probably influential in jazz/blues world? Which I disappointingly have very little experience with so I don't think I can fully appreciate it. Sounded good though
Love it. I haven't spent a ton of time listening to them in the past but was vaguely aware. First time listening to this all the way through as an album, and couldn't get enough. Love the mid-90's Matthew Sweet-ish guitar sound and acoustic-ish electric sound, with a The Shins mellowness. What's the world got in store -- unexpected highlight for me.
I can hear the influence to Bowie, Talking Heads, and more. This 1001 list is feeling more like the 1001 "influencer" or "original" list though. It's fine. But sometimes I'd rather listen to the great stuff that followed it. Roxy Music picked an original sound and feel, sure. But is an album that made it only to UK #10 in 1970 really one of the best 1001 albums of ALL TIME? *sigh* this project might be wearing on me. Also the list has a strong UK bias, which again is fine, as it reflects the author or editor's taste, just not all are 1001 in my own book.
Saying all that. I appreciated this album. Never heard of Roxy Music before. But as a Bowie, Talking Heads, Duran Duran, etc fan, this felt like a fun listen.
WTF was that. we've reached the modern abstract art category. decent background movie tracks i suppose. probably super innovative in some musical theory sort of way. a top 1001 album of all time? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Really enjoyed it and was surprised by many samples that I didn't even know were samples until now
The Zurich song was alright
Good stuff. Fully enjoyable style and voice. I was excited to listen to this because I know it as one of my mom's favorite albums and I'm not sure I've ever listened to it fully through before now.
I tried but just couldn't get into it
Enjoyable 80's style. Crazy time period.
The backing music was great. The vocals were meh for me. I just don't get UK music many times i think. But really enjoyed the beats.
I'm a fan of live albums. The 1st half of this album is ok mid-70's rock. The last 1/4 was really good, especially Surrender.
Not a top 1001 album, i don't care what anyone says :-)
