1001 Albums Summary

I went into it only knowing Hallelujah. I do ultimately understand why this album is so highly regarded, it’s beautifully written and performed. Lyrically it’s strong for most of it, and of course Jeff Buckley’s story is a tragedy, but this album does nothing for me. Eternal Life is the only one I would consider listening to again on my own time. In general it’s not my taste. It’s just kind of boring to me and too slow - I went into it for some reason figuring that was going to be case and I was correct. Corpus Christi Carol sounded incredible and angelic and I think it’s a high point of the album, but still not for my personal taste. I suspect this will be one of my lower rated albums on the list.

It was not my favourite album but I could absolutely see it growing on me after a re-listen or two. It’s very complex and layered with all kinds of different sounds and is really well produced. Many moments remind me a bit of David Bowie because of the use of many abstract themes and sounds, and the voice is similar as well. There’s lots of songs that are gloomy yet whimsical and fun making it very weird and contradictory at many points. I loved Disco 2000 and Bar Italia. Feeling Called Love is incredibly strange yet awesome. Definitely deserves a place on the list and has opened my eyes to more great britpop apart from just Blur and Oasis. Album art is 5 stars. Overall, not my favourite because some of it was a bit too out there making for some challenging listening moments, but it’s so unique and creative. I want to say 2.5 but because I don’t have that option I’m rounding down to 2, however it could easily go up in my books after some more listens

I went into it, knowing and liking a few of the songs already. Obviously it’s a groundbreaking album that deserves a place on the list. The sounds are very primitive but clearly a great foundation for many genres of music including rock, surf rock, pop, etc. There’s not much cohesion to the album, and sounds more like a compilation of singles strung together but this was typical for the time. That’ll Be the Day is a clear high point, but starts and ends off strong with Oh Boy and Rock Me My Baby. I probably wouldn’t listen to it again as a whole album, but would absolutely listen to almost every song individually again.

First time listening to album, and overall I enjoyed a good chunk of the tracks. Some of it was a bit slow for my taste, but there was a lot of soul, emotion, and beautiful writing that absolutely make it worthy of being on this list. It starts and ends on very high points with a bit of a lull in the middle. Overall not my fave but recognize her talent. Album art 2.5 stars.
