This was really, really great. I think that Isaac Hayes is a genius who deserves all the recognition that he gets if not more. Yes, the 9 minute spoken word intro on By The Time I Get To Phoenix might not be for everyone but the music is so damn good regardless. This is absolutely classic progressive soul and each of the 4 songs on here, which are mostly radically rearranged covers are awesome.
This is a certified hood classic. I love how the overall tone of the album kind of misleads you with the bomb of an opener "21st Century Schizoid Man," which is just super heavy and intense with those distorted, dark vocals and the raw guitar riff with the multi-instrumentalism from Ian McDonald. And then the rest of the album is just chill. It's honestly one of the most beautiful rock albums ever recorded, and you wouldn't expect that from the opening song. I love this album.
Oh, this was really damn good. I feel like that's going to be a recurring theme for every single one of these mini-reviews. I think that the Isley Brothers' position in the general span of music is absolutely legendary. I mean, the way they were able to evolve from simply just being a great vocal group made up of 3 brothers in the 1950s and 60s to being a full-fledged 6 piece soul, funk, and rock band in the 70s is amazing. This album is great. The vocals are great, the guitar is amazing, it's sexy, it's funky, it's everything you would want out of a 70s R&B album. I would say my least favorite song here was the cover of Listen to the Music by the Doobie Brothers, I just felt a little let down because that original is such a great song. No, but this album is great and That Lady is absolutely iconic.
UMMMM, greatest hip hop album of all time??? Also, one of these albums where I’m like, what even more is there to say for me about it. This album started a whole new era of hip hop and so many rappers and producers owe it to The Chronic and to Dr. Dre. So classic.
Fire. Classic. Black Sabbath had such a great 6 album run.
Listened to this. Great album.
I've been meaning to listen to this for years holy fuck
Classic, incredible album, so influential, I love it to death. Also Peter Gabriel's So is really great but I never got the chance to review it here.
Obvious classic, one of the best live records/concerts ever. I have Laguna nostalgia watching this in their house on their TV.
Great album. The most I’ve listened to Bobby Womack for years has been Across 110th St, and I always thought that was an amazing song, so I’m really happy I’ve finally listened to him in an extended fashion. I think it’s really cool how he was able to naturally adapt his music for the times of the 80s past the 60s and 70s, without it coming across kitschy, like how Herbie Hancock adapted his music for the 70s past the 60s. And you can also hear Sly Stone’s influence on Womack just as much as you can hear Womack’s influence on someone like Luther Vandross. Yeah but Secrets, Just My Imagination, and Stand Up are especially so good, and If You Think You’re Lonely Now is the perfect R&B equivalent of 80s pop rock power ballad schmooze (I genuinely mean that in the best way).
This is most definitely something I can see myself revisiting sometime soon. I find it interesting how much it's characterized among grunge of the early 90s. This leans much more heavily on punk and garage then grunge. Perhaps because they were from Seattle. Super interesting though. I had never heard of Mudhoney before listening.
