Don’t listen to hip hop but this is pretty good actually.

3.5/5
very early 2000s...not my favorite. sounds sort of unoriginal...and monotonous after a while. this could be due to 2023 context and because i listen to too much indie rock though. Also I disliked the lack of focus on melody really - it feels very bass driven and not in a good way, and I don't love that. and vocals are kind of reminiscent of Bowie but melodies are trash
intro of "take me out" reminded me of joy division's "love will tear us apart" but like a less cool version
best (both mid):
the dark of the matinee / come on home (it's fine?)
worst: :(
auf achse / cheating on you / michael
rating: 2/5. sorry :/ only 2 decent tracks
first impression: super '50s, but fun, kind of catchy, not too cheesy, kind of similar to early beatles' stuff which was def inspired by like doo-wop/50s rock and roll (you've got love ~ please please me, the song)
best: (I mean they're all pretty solid)
you've got love (it's cheesy but in a cute way)
i'm lookin' for someone to love (this is so '50s!! 10/10 would dance next to the gramophone to this song)
worst: (which isn't particularly bad, but the cheese is a bit too thick)
maybe baby
an empty cup
overall 3.5/5! very fun, but a bit out-of-date.
Whoa - GREAT intro! I get why this is on the vinyl wishlist. Have listened to CITW, BATJ, GYBR before evidently.
Is there a hidden sarcasm between the CITW -> BATJ tracklist order? reading in the magazines / papers, these performances both intentional and unintentional...
and then on side 2, GYBR as a showstopper reclaming that role as artist/performer and romanticizing his retreat. (but is this only the beginning?)
best:
CITW is so good!!
underrated: Roy Rogers
worst:
jamaica jerk-off (yikes)
dirty girl (wtf)
overall: 3.75/5. some tracks are good, a couple are amazing, a couple did not age well...
Never listened to Bjork before. first impression is that this is horribly confusing but I'm not averse to it? Would not listen to this casually though. Like it's dance music for people who want to be beamed up by aliens.
like someone in love is the only like semi tonal piece, but jazzy and sounds of cars rushing pass - or perhaps extraterrestrial spaceships...
this is kind of giving me a headache. violent, jubilant, overlong, pointed with a smooth landing. listening to radiohead after this is almost calming, wow...
best:
big time sensuality?
come to me
worst:
aeroplane (just too jumpy - the jazz is too dissonant - too many things going on. it just doesn't mix well not even as an experiment)
4/5 but won't listen again LOL
I totally get why Bowie was a fan...The lyrics are ridiculously pretentious, but the delivery is so lighthearted, yet intentional...
It's interesting! Can't really rank from one listen. 4/5, might give this band another shot.
4.5/5. I'll give it another listen sometime. but it's excellent, not a single bad song.
first impression: just WOW! It feels very '60s and (early) '90s at the same time - tight beats, "wall of sound" but feels a little bit dancepop. I've never heard of this before and it is quite good, very psychedelic. But the songs do start to blend into each other... they are quite catchy in a chill way. great late-night study listen.
standouts: waterfall, shoot you down, but really all are great
3.75/5. Slightly dated but kind of a nice, light listen
Most of these songs sound (at least production-wise) like they could've come from an indie folk band from the past few years? totally did NOT expect to love this for a 1967 band...
listening to The Stone Roses s/t before this (clearly '60s "inspired") was an interesting experience.
best:
expecting to fly, sad memory
worst:
broken arrow. did not need the "take me out to the ball game" interpolation
YES. This is the vibe I needed this week!
Jazzy, a laid-back kind of self-aware, and simply exuding cool.
Some lyrics sound a bit dated (ex. Living for the City, which is also kind of overlong)
highlights: Visions, Jesus Children of America, All In Love is Fair (this is my favorite), He’s Misstra
not-highlights: Not the biggest fan of spoken-word intros. Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing is great in everything but the intro…
4/5
