Club Classics Vol. One by Soul II Soul

Absolutely incredible. Groovy, funky, endlessly sampleable. Love the interplay between the vocals and breaks, the tension created in "Back to Life" is immense, but fully satisfied by the drums when they come in. I was surprised how album-ey it was despite the title suggesting it was a compilation. The production / mastering is consistent throughout, and the songs flow perfectly into each other (they even avoided those common mp3 tails to preserve the beat). I only wish the additional tracks at the end were included in a separate release. But that would have been a waste back when this was released, and more expensive vs today with streaming. Gonna come back to this one for sure.

It's Blitz! by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Jan 03 2024

Really like the synths and harmony, reminds me of NiN a bit. Rocking vocals. Good tracks but not my favourite as an album. Listened in the car while picking up furniture. Album: 3/5 Listening environment: 2/5

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
Jan 04 2024

Good album with some absolute classics. Paranoia blues is a favourite. His blues stuff in general is my favourite. A little rough around the edges in places, from a time where not everything was so polished (and an early album for him too). Can see the inspiration of other artists in his style. Listened at the gym Listening environment: 4/5 Album: 4/5

Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg
Jan 05 2024

Some decent tracks in here. The production is interesting, but somewhat stale over the length of the album. Don't love the skits, and the rapping is pretty repetitive and straight up unoriginal at times (quoting other rappers in multiple places). A good album in its time, for its target audience but not my favourite. Listened while working and in the car. Listening environment: 4/5

Crosby, Stills & Nash by Crosby, Stills & Nash
Jan 07 2024

A classic album. Great vocal chorus style which is often replicated in other albums that followed. Some really great songs that lasted and still sound good today. Other sections get more pychadellic and electric, so good range there. Really consistent and feels like a proper album. My only complaint is it gets a little boring in the second half. Judy blue eyes is a favourite. Listened while working Env: 3/5

Goo by Sonic Youth
Jan 08 2024

Seems like a "cool" band, but the music isn't particularly exciting to me. Some interesting soundscapes, but just a generally forgettable album to me. Nothing stands out. Lyrics don't speak to me. Listened at the gym Listening env: 3/5

Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette
Jan 09 2024

Really like the 90s instrumental sound. Very unique vocal style. "You oughta know" is a great song. The rest of the album is okay, but not my favourite. Good songwriting too actually, definitely a better 90s album to me than "Goo" by sonic youth.

Bright Flight by Silver Jews
Jan 10 2024

What did I just listen to... The vocals are awful, like a lazy Bob dillan sound, but less distinctive with terrible tone control. The instrumentals are that of a high school indie band. How did this get on the top 1000?

OK by Talvin Singh
Jan 12 2024

Very experimental. Sonically interesting, but some of the sounds get a little repetitive over time. I preferred the breakbeat/intelligent DnB parts, but didn't love the particular instruments used over top.

Deep Purple In Rock by Deep Purple
Jan 13 2024

Great guitar work. Kind of generic as far as rock goes. Didn't really speak to my tastes.

Birth Of The Cool by Miles Davis
Jan 16 2024

Even as a person who doesn't listen to a lot of Jazz, its obvious that Miles Davis is an excellent musician. The band sounds great in this recording.

I See You by The xx
Jan 18 2024

The XX are very good at creating atmosphere and vibe. The album sits very consistently in that atmosphere. I always like the contrast of male/female vocals together. Definitely enjoyed it. I also appreciate its not too long.

Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem
Jan 23 2024

Great sound. Pretty funky, kind of an 80s vibe with some disco drums and analog synths. The lyrics are kind of strange at times, but its mostly dance music where that doesn't matter as much anyway.

Sign 'O' The Times by Prince
Jan 27 2024

Prince is a great entertainer and guitar player, but what the hell was this album. It was so bad I questioned whether something was wrong with the system I was listening to it on. Not his best work for sure.
