Prior to listening to this project, I was vaguely familiar with the XX through the individual work of Jamie XX, a beatmaker and producer. However, after listening to this project a few times through, there are several components that stand out. Firstly, it is minimalistic and creates an atmosphere I really enjoy. The instrumentation consists of a guitar, bass piano, drums, and some simple programming here and there. Furthermore, the tracks flow very well together and it is the perfect album to throw on if one is looking for a semi-melancholic project while relaxing or to play in the background.
I usually don’t listen to this style of music often but this was a very enjoyable listen. I like the blues influence of the Doors and the grittiness in Morrison’s delivery. This album is one i’ll revisit again for sure.
This is the first OutKast album I listened to in its entirety. Overall, it’s a really unique, yet enjoyable listen. It’s apparent that the album is influenced by 70’s/80’s funk with influences being Parliament Funkadelic, etc. This sound comes out in songs such as Toilet Tisha, I’ll Call B4 I Cum (Love Gangsta Boo’s flow on this track), and Slum Beautiful. It’s rooted in an older sound but also packaged for the time it was released. Furthermore, hits like So Fresh, So Clean and Ms. Jackson are on this project. I like this project a lot and would definitely revisit.
This is some straightforward, blue-eyed soul rock. Nothing super out there and just an enjoyable listen overall. Definitely transported me to the sound of that era.
This project felt like one continuous song yet it felt like different phases of the same journey. I’ve always been a fan of jazz due to my trumpet background and i’ve listened to other Coltrane records in the past. It isn’t a surprise I enjoyed this. Definitely would return to this record if I am ever in the mood for a musical odyssey.
Some words to describe this project are minimal, melancholic, and somber. It’s minimal in the sense that the instrumentation is limited to three major components: guitar, harmonica, and vocals. However, it’s engaging because Springsteen tells tales of individuals living across America. The tone is melancholic because the stories aren’t very triumphant and make the listener feel a sense of sadness over their various plights. Ironically, the overall tone has a tinge of warmth and is music that would be perfect for an early morning with a cup of coffee in hand. I definitely enjoyed this project and am surprised since I don’t listen to this genre of music much at all.
I really like this project and i’m very happy it was recommended. The combo of rock and breakbeats is infectious definitely up my alley. I’m excited to look into more of their music.
This was an interesting project with a lot of abstract elements. This isn’t something I would revisit often but I can appreciate the artistry.
I could write an essay on how good this album is but i’ll refrain. Nonetheless, this album is perfect. Each song fits into the flow of the project while also having the weight to standalone. Furthermore, the orchestration is fantastic across the board and the imagery portrayed deals with early pregnancy, opulence, unrequited love, and so on. I’ve been rocking with this since 2012 and will continue to do so forever.
