An album I previously dismissed as a ramshackle prequel to “If you’re feeling sinister”. My revisit was a pleasant surprise. The album is quite a statement, with strong youthful themes and ideas aplenty.
A shuffling, swirly organ, guitar picking fest. Timeless and impeccably engineered. Good for background but not 100% my thing.
Got that Jesus Christ Superstar vibe going on. Which ain’t a bad thing. The lyrics are weak but the arrangements are interesting. It meanders. It isn’t for me but I can recognise why people like it.
Dog shit vocals over super tight playing. Produced to within an inch of its life. I imagine lots of high fiving gong down at the mix sessions between browsing yacht brochures. And god it’s so lonnnnnng. Pure torture. That noise was me whooping loud when it finished. I will never ever listen to this ever again. Never.
A beautiful record.
I love xtc but this always seemed overthought and trying to be clever. The loose cycle concept seems like an afterthought. But still an enjoyable listen. God bless XTC and all who sail with them.
