1001 Albums Summary

#1) Searing funk, hypnotic driving rhythms and a walloping energy that steers onward, to shrink back to the essence of the groove, and re-emerge in punchy blasts of brass. Fantastic live album, I danced to it while I was making a dinner of cabbage and spinach-ricotta tortellini. Today I give it 4.

#2) I like ELO a lot. Although, compared to this album, I much prefer New World Record or Time. I would easily place one of those other two albums in my top ten favourite albums ever. Discovery, Face the Music, and On the Third Day are also a lot of fun. This one has some interesting ideas - and notably features Mr Bluesky, Sweet Talkin Woman, Turn to Stone - some big hits on it, but outside of a few inspired moments of Jeff Lynne songwriting, this album feels a little bland overall. The production is big and lush with rich orchestral/choral embellishments; delightful textured synths; and big rocking hooks. It's the signiature ELO sound, but still feels pretty hit or miss somehow. Anyway, I think there are better and more consistent ELO albums. This one's sitting at a high 3, but I bump up to 4 for having some of its very strong moments, and I must maintain my bias towards ELO, naturally. I have memories of listening to the double CD in my dad's car. Nostalgia wins.

Baba O'Riley is a miracle of a song

Some crazy genre switches. I had to stop once or twice to check the same album was playing. Very cool.

Eddie Haze's guitar solo on the title track is the greatest recorded guitar performance of all time. It destroys me every time I hear it. The rest of this album has some of my favourite tracks by P-Funk. Fantastic album.
