1001 Albums Summary

One of the most mournfully sweet, magical albums. My god, if angels could speak through people, they absolutely sang through Jeff Buckley.

Freakin love The Smiths. LOVE this album. How can something be so melancholy yet so full of whimsy? Such clever music. Morrissey is a prick of a person, but it's a case of having to separate the art from the artist, because my god, his voice and lyrics are incredible.

• Love "Pick Up Your Feelings". Love the production of this song. Gives me a feeling I wish I could describe... It's the kind of song I would LOVE to hear live. • Put It Down is unexpectedly relatable... Wasn't expecting that lol. • "On It" is so sultryyyy. • The conversational clips, told from different black women's perspectives: I can see what Jazmine is doing. All these conversational clips are to make a statement that this album is coming from a place of giving black women a voice about their identity with womanhood, societal identity and sexuality. These clips add a personable, casual conversation tone to the album, like Jasmine is wanting to include us, the listeners, in this conversation. It gives the vibe that this album is a collection of different women of colour's stories. I really kinda like it. • Amanda's Tale is... relatable. I'm not black, but I am a woman, and her statements about comparing herself to other women, feeling like she only has sex to offer, acknowledging that her sexual power is empowering but also sad at the same time... "I feel moments of sadness knowing that just me alone and who I am is not enough" yeah, oof. • The way the final track segues from Amanda's Tale is really well done. Love the journey of this album - of women proudly talking of their sexual liberation... and coming to realise by the end of the album that the experience of women - black women, white women, but especially black because that is where this album is coming from, speaking from - is that all men see is sex and not what lives beneath that. The shame, hurt, only feeling like sex is all men see as worthwhile in woman, all that women are taught to see is valuable in themselves. Really like this album. Very thoughtful, melancholic, full of womanly curves in its soft and sultry beats and tones, and gritty in all its raw and honest revelations of black femininity.
