Absolute funk, was really digging some more Motown/soul so glad I got this for DAY 1. Really love how The Temptations can keep the same groove for an entire song but still make it so addictive. Can imagine cracking this out in the kitchen after a big day. Also the bass singer is 😮💨
Favourite songs: Funky Music, and I Ain’t Got Nothin’
My first Duran Duran album I've listened to. Love it! Fast paced- synth driven songs with killer guitar. This is such an 80's album.
Favourite songs: Rio, Hungry Like a Wolf, My Own Way, Hold Back the Rain
I do enjoy this album, it’s a real interesting electro-80s styled album. Kind of like Joy Divison, it did take me longer to get into this album. I already knew ENJOY THE SILENCE and love love that track, a few others like WORLD IN MY EYES and POLICY OF TRUTH are fantastic. I genuine enjoy aspects of the album and see why it’s highly regarded, it’s just not entirely my vibe.
Definitely has a talent with handling audiences, also a talent with handling cousins so I've heard
Was shocked at how flawless this album is, Tracey Chapman is such a talent. I was already aware of FAST CAR, but all these are as good if not better. Side A of this album is a seriously good run, the first 5 songs are probably my favourite. Amazing lyricism too
Unfortunately, this album just doesn't do it for me. Majority of these tracks feel unfinished and super empty. Regardless of Jack's vocal style, it's a little too whiny for me in this record. Not much drumming going on too :o
Favourite tracks: Blue Orchid
Not knowing the language allowed me to fully focus on the musicality, and it’s fantastic really. Sets a great tone across the tracks, Serge’s soft spoken and tender vocals are really enchanting. A highlight are the creative guitar choices in the album and the orchestral choir of voices towards the end of the final track
Favourites: honestly I struggle to pick individual songs, I find the entire album has a great vibe.
Have been meaning to get around listening to Janis Joplin, so finally got a good taste of her sound + Big Brother! What a fantastic voice, and I love her blend with the band. The sound gets a little too blurry at times, but a god damn amazing groove to it.
Favourite tracks: first 5 songs
Tough one. Didn't really listen to much of it, went through the most listened tracks and they really aren't my style. Not saying its bad, but just hard for me to listen through. I was debating on whether I should vote it 1 or 2 stars, but the sheer length of the album really puts me off (and most listeners so I've heard). Nice one Magnetic Fields but unfortunately just not for me.
So sad that he is gone, super super talented. I knew a couple of tracks but man for a debut album, it is amazing! Especially knowing how much of the production he was in control of, shows that his talents go further than just his phenomenal voice. Also, I've never noticed this before, but his vocals in FAITH sound so similar to Freddie Mercury!
Favourites: Kissing a Fool
Faith
Father Figure
Hand to Mouth
Look at Your Hands
One of my all time favourites. When comparing this to their previous 5 albums, you can really see the monumental changes in their music process. Experimentation is on the rise as they expand their instrumentation, concepts and song structures. I find that the progression from Help! to Rubber Soul to Revolver perfectly demonstrates how The Beatles went from just another Liverpool band, to one of the greats.
Favourites: Michelle, In My Life, Norwegian Wood, I'm Looking Through You, If I Needed Someone, Nowhere Man, Drive My Car, Girl
(all of them really haha)
The infamous, seductive song "Let's Get It On" is followed by a groovy and sensual tracklist. Very different to his album from 2 years prior "What's Going On", but still has that fantastic Marvin voice with a musical heaven backing him up.
Favourite tracks: Lets get it on, Please don't stay, If I should die tonight, Distant lover
