John Lennon is doing the most interesting songs here but they don't always click for me, and then George and Paul are writing great songs, but not as interesting as earlier stuff. Still they are great songs, especially the medley is an awesome way to out. I love the Beatles, I can't give 4.5, so 5
Nice enough listen, even with some 80isms, but held back by poor, obvious writing and self-seriousness
Definitely a very impressively made and ambitious album, but I did find the theatricality and upbeat nature of the whole thing to be a bit too much. Maybe a weird thing to say but I'd much prefer this album as a video game soundtrack. Giving it 2 stars, maybe deserves a 3.
This was convenient because it's actually the only 80s REM album I hadn't listened to. Honestly I'm not big on R.E.M and especially wasn't big on Green, so not big on this either. Sounds like average slightly off-kilter 80s pop rock to me. Kind of repetitive outside of a couple variations. Also Michael Stipe's voice really clashes with the big 80s production. Like End of the World though
I think I overestimated how many of these 1001 albums, I'd listened to, because I thought I'd end up getting something I've heard like 1/3 of the time. What's actually happening is it's having me listen to stuff I figured I'd get to some day, but not today I haven't listened to much jazz, and I thought I'd maybe start with some 50s stuff, but I got Love Supreme here so there you go I think I'm a somewhat story driven listener, something I find easier to find in music with lyrics, but I did think this was pretty cool. The drums are great This wasn't a great review but oh well just scroll past. for being a fairly enjoyable departure from what I usually listen to, I think it just crosses my first listen 3 threshold
I think why Kate Bush has some of the best pop albums of the 80s is I would feel wrong just calling her music "pop music". You never really know where her records are gonna go. Hounds of Love is the perfect example of that. Side one filled with some of the best pop songs of the 80s, and a more out there conceptual side two (that doesn't completely land for me) High 3
Strong production and atmosphere. A couple dud tracks (One Love and Lately), but also a couple hits (Safe From Harm and Unfinished Sympathy)
Been meaning to listen to this for a while so nice to get it here. This started out as good but a little bit generic 90s alternative, like the embodiment of MTV unplugged. Not a bad thing but not my favourite. But then halfway through you get Soft Wolf Tread and Stars n' Stripes doing a sort of twisted fairytale thing, and then the bigger, noisier America Snoring and Grace, and I'm sold again. I'll say this just misses my first listen 4 cutoff
Didn't like the Zappa stuff I've listened to before. The mix of overly proggy music with stupid lyrics wasn't meshing for me. I prefer early Ween where the songs and the lyrics are stupid. I think this is a pretty quality, colourful release, but aside from Peaches en Regalia the tracks failed to really hold my interest
I feel like I could become a Steely Dan guy, but I'm not there yet. I kind of like their attitude and writing, but they're a little too smooth for me. This is probably their most average release. A few good hits at the start, then nice enough but a bit slight throughout the rest
