Appetite For Destruction by Guns N' Roses
Sep 04 2024

Izzy Stradlin. Brother…I was not familiar with your game. Your playing sounds like the guitar itself is inebriated—someone else here described your playing as louche—but I quite like it. Your rhythm work falls into this odd, but brazen pocket. This was my favorite thing about the album. This is my first, and will probably be my only, time listening to this album in full, but I started to enjoy listening to it the second time through. It was nice to hear the more popular songs within the context of the full album. Slash was great as always. Axl’s singing isn’t as bad as some of the other reviews make it seem 😂 Thankful to have been introduced to Anything Goes and Rocket Queen. 3/5

Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine
Sep 05 2024

Wow...I really liked this one. I particularly enjoyed the band's ability to replicate the genre conventions of Hip Hop whilst maintaining that Rock sound. The instrumentation is probably my favorite thing about the album. I particularly enjoyed Morello and Commerford's effects throughout. E.G. Morello's "record scratches" on Fistful of Steel and Commerford's "808s" on Township Rebellion. And, of course, I commend the band for taking an unapologetic stand against our nation's poor politics and betrayal of both its citizens and global citizens. Still rings true today. (They're goated for releasing this on an Election Day lol) And I appreciate the acknowledgement of both Rock and Hip Hop as protest genres born of necessity. Will be adding this to the rotation. 5/5

Catch A Fire by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Sep 06 2024

When I hear Afro-Caribbean music, I am always so amazed by how similar each genre sounds to Southern Black/Creole American music styles like (stomp/clap) Gospel, Blues, Zydeco, Country, Fife & Drum, etc... Hypnotic background vocals reminiscent of gospel/barbershop quartets, guitar playing that at some times sounds like a steel guitar, laid back drums and bass parts that keep an easy pace, and meticulous keyboard/clav/organ playing that take center stage. Talk about diasporic interconnectedness. Awesome vinyl sleeve btw 3/5

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix

Excellent musicianship! 1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) was magical. Drags a little bit for my liking though :/ 3/5

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen
Sep 08 2024

Had never listened to Springsteen, nor did I know who he was, so it was nice to have the chance to listen to someone/thing I truly didn't know anything about. The vocals aren't to my tastes though, and the album, as a whole, is a bit boring. I liked the slower songs best: Something in the Night, Racing in the Street, Streets of Fire. 2/5

Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones
Sep 09 2024

Eh. Gimmie Shelter, Midnight Rambler, and Monkey Man were my favorites; everything else was pretty humdrum. Cool harmonica lines throughout though. 3/5

My Generation by The Who

Can't believe this is my first time listening to the Who. Amazing. 5/5

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel

Not to my tastes. 2/5
