Station To Station by David Bowie
Sep 26 2024

1976. 1. Station to station - Looooooong intro. Over 3 mins before vocals. I enjoyed the final chapter of the song - there were several. I think I would enjoy this more after more listens. 2. Golden Years - I already know this song. Some funky bass. 3. Word on a Wing - mid tempo, great vocals, really enjoyed this. 4. TVC15 - tiny bit know this one already. Very enjoyable. 5. Stay - Another with a funky beat. Great concluding instrumental. 6. Wild is the Wind - masterpiece. One of my favourite Bowie songs and one of my favourite ever songs. Breathtaking.

The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground
Sep 30 2024

First song was bloody awful. Second song - the bit that was enjoyable was when no one was singing. Third song sounded a bit country. Completely forgettable. Fourth song - can't hold a note Fifth song - a song about ruddy Jesus Sixth song - sounds like budget Bowie Seventh song - whiny Eighth song - two minutes repeating 'that's the story of my life' Ninth song - a load of talking over music, bloody awful, cacophony of shite Tenth song - new voice. Still not in key. This was painful.

Music From Big Pink by The Band
Oct 01 2024

I listened to this whilst cleaning so I didn't read the lyrics along with the music. I regret this as really I only experienced the 'vibe' of the music instead of paying attention to the words. That said, I enjoyed some songs on the first listen. It was a very different world back then without autotune and I appreciated the rawness of some of the harmonies. I'd give this album another go.

Zombie by Fela Kuti

I am scoring this as someone who is not really a fan of jazz. I am pleased I listened to this knowing the political context as that added another layer. For me, as someone who isn't a massive fan off jazz, I would have preferred the instrumental parts of the songs to be shorter to get to the lyrics sooner as once we were there, I loved this. I appreciate this is a me problem rather than a critique of the album. I am grateful for the learning that listening to and understanding the context of this album gave me.

Siembra by Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
Oct 03 2024

I thought I would enjoy this more with loving Gloria Estefan as a kid, but I was indifferent. This is not a reflection on the quality of the album, but on my personal taste.

A Hard Day's Night by Beatles
Oct 07 2024

So I knew: A hard day's night I should have known better And I love her Can't buy me love Songs I didn't know: I'm happy just to dance with you If I feel Tell me why Any time at all I'll cry instead Things we said today When I get home You can't do that I'll be back This reflects side 1 being a soundtrack. They were the bangers of the album. It feels like an alien world where songs are less than a minute. The lyrics to You can't do that haven't aged well. Beatles don't really do it for me.
