1001 Albums Summary

Stuart Copeland remains one of my favorite drummers. The middle of the album contains all the A-sides that were massive hits but the first four tracks are so different. Has some African beats mixed in. Definitely takes me back.

Janelle Monáe has an incredible voice and can switch styles so easily—it’s impressive. You can hear hints of Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Lauryn Hill in her sound, and there’s a lot of R&B influence. But honestly, the style changes felt forced to me. The songs are well-made, but I just didn’t connect with any of them. I appreciate her talent and the effort to do something different, but it just wasn’t for me. 2 out of 5.

This is pure, rough energy. There’s no polish, just raw rock that’s perfectly messy. It doesn’t rely on flashy production; instead, it’s all about that rare, authentic feeling. The album is a reminder that rock, at its heart, doesn’t need any frills to make an impact.

Black Sabbath Vol. 4 shows why they’re legends in rock. The drumming hits hard, the guitars rip with heavy riffs, and Ozzy’s voice. They try new things here, and it all lands—especially “Changes,” which lets them step outside their usual sound. The opening track is classic Sabbath, starting things strong with that two-songs-in-one vibe. This album is solid and I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve listened to it.

The Velvet Underground & Nico has this cool beatnik poet vibe that feels a bit like The Beatles and The Doors but with its own edge. The songs stick to a simple, repetitive groove, which just pulls you in deeper. “Sunday Morning” is such an interesting opener—soft, subtle, and totally ’60s. It sets the mood right away for an album that’s laid-back but still leaves a lasting mark. This one’s got a unique feel that really captures that era

This is damn close to being better than, Nevermind. Certainly better than Bleach. The grittiness is there. The simple melodies with haunting lyrics. The Dave Grohl perfect drum track for each song. The way he goes from batter head to rim shot in Heart Shaped Box is genius. You can tell that their sound was getting to a master level. They don’t try and do anything outlandish outside of what and who they are, but they are getting really close to perfecting it with this album. Heart Shaped Box is an underrated song for these guys and All Apologies is such an acoustic classic. This is a 4.5 for me but since we don’t do half stars I’m giving it a 4.

Bruce is a great song writer that’s about it.

Brown Sugar by D’Angelo has a smooth, soulful vibe that’s unmistakably ’90s, with rich, laid-back grooves throughout. The album leans heavy into its slow, jazz-influenced R&B sound, which gives it a mellow feel, though at times it feels like it’s sticking too close to that same groove without much variety. It’s cool for what it is, but it doesn’t hit as hard as it could.

Other than the first two tracks, the rest of the album is just meh.

All sounded the same. Great voice, boring songs.
