1001 Albums Summary

Drive My Car (upbeat, catchy tunes), romantic, (Norwegian Wood, You Won't See Me), lighthearted

Basic in production, piano-driven melodies, experimentation with marimba. Sounds more like alternative rock + country + blues than grunge and punk. Favourites: My Doorbell (upbeat, Motown sound), Little Ghost (mandolin, Appalachian-style folk melody, bluegrass), Instinct Blues (raw, swampy blues rock about sexual frustration)

Jazz + classical (elements of African and Spanish themes), 11-piece band, third stream, avant-garde jazz. Mingus: wrote a ballet, "ethnic folk-dance music". Favourites: all.

An anti-war progressive masterpiece. Tracks: Yours Is No Disgrace (anti-war); Starship Trooper (peak early 70s - UFO, environmentalism, the song continually changes mood, tempo, rhythm and style), I've Seen All The Good People (two parts of the song: acapella in 3-part harmony, rock accompaniement -> grandiose church organ sound), Perpetual Change (Moon landing vs environmental problems on Earth). Favourites: Yours is No Disgrace, Perpetual Change.

The Ninth Wave (mini concept-album, the second side of Hounds of Love) is surreal and atmospheric, especially Under Ice and Jig of Life. It's about a woman drowning in the aftermath of a shipwreck. The rest of the album is either generic, or just not my style at all.

Hauntingly beautiful soothing voice. Melancholic mood and bittersweet lyrics, some even tragic and downright depressing. Fits a chill evening, but very little variety in sound, you get tired/bored halfway through the album. Favourites: Misguided Angel, I Don't Get It.
