1001 Albums Summary

For every cool riff, and passage I can bob my head along to, there's another 5 minutes of nothing. I wish the guitarists were what drove the song and not the vocalist. When the instruments do what they want its a good listen but often it feels like they are constrained which takes away so much impact. I can see how it was influential but I don't think I could listen to it again.

For the record I’m biased already. Actually really enjoying shout. I don’t know when I’d listen to it regularly but it’s got this kind of grimy build up. The vocals don’t overpower the instruments, in fact they have a couple solos for different instruments. Very good layering. Mother’s talk was also kinda fun but this “I believe” isn’t striking any chords with me. “Broken” was almost perfect but it ended so weakly. Cool moments but can’t say much stood out to me.

I am so far from the target audience. 0% of this is meant to resonate with me. I wonder if the drummer gets bored, because it doesn't seem to me there's a lot of variation in what they do. I wouldn't be surprised either if the guitarists are bored. There's so much this instruments can do that they aren't. I'm listening to "storms" right now, and I think it is trying to be sad, but this is more sleepy than anything. The guitar tone of "Not that funny" and some of the vocal inflections remind me of punk but this is without any bite. I think this encapsulates a fundamental issue with this whole experiment because in 79 this may have been groundbreaking and gone onto influence others but then I've been listening to those people who have already taken the sound and ran with it. This packs no punch. Sisters of the moon was a banger tho. Beautiful child was a good song. That one made me feel something.

“Speed king” is an absolute banger. It moves around a lot but keeps the feeling throughout. Good stuff. It’s hard to listen to it as it was when it came out after listening to so many groups that expanded upon this sound, but even as is it was still quite strong. I think child in time needed some more polish but the idea of these low to high builds is solid.

Good stuff. Love this classic hip hop with what sound to be live instruments, or at least very well mixed instruments. Again, decades after people have done this sound better to more unique results and idk how many of these songs I’d go back to but I enjoyed listening to them.

Black mirror was a waste of time. I think I’m already getting something from this experience tho. I think I can safely say that I prefer instrumentally driven tracks. I had a hunch but this song “keep the car running” I think may have confirmed it. I didn’t mind the vocals per se but they didn’t make me feel anything. The instruments were fantastic and creative, and what I would have traded for an instrumental section instead of another sung verse. Would have been amazing. Violins are gorgeous, so why let it play second fiddle in neon Bible? Pun very well intended. “Black waves/bad vibrations” was quite good. Twists and turns that kept me hooked. “The well and the lighthouse” to “the windowsill” were painfully boring. No cars go wasn’t an all-time favorite BUT after a point it gave the spotlight to its various instrument choices which was incredibly gratifying and it had a payoff even I felt. Shoulda ended the album honestly. The final track honestly felt like a less successful attempt at that.
