Hard Again
Muddy Waters
Music that oozes Black American history. Great soundtrack for while I was toiling in the field (repairing the planter box). Love the harmonicas and slow southern twang, but the guitar & drums heavier stuff really cut through. Mannish Boy is a belter of an opening track - gets right up in your face & demands you pay attention. Also liked Deep Down in Florida.

I’m sure this ripped back in the day, and Jump in particular must’ve sounded so fresh and exciting. But wasn’t really for me. Don’t really like his voice. Some of the frantic guitar shredding is cool, but generally came across a bit bland and repetitive (though I’m sure this would improve significantly played LOUD on a proper stereo and not my dinky headphones!)

Jagged Little Pill
Alanis Morissette
Great album. Her voice can be a little jarring at times, but I think that’s more because it’s so distinctive that it’s almost become a parody of itself (cant knock it for its cultural prominence!) I love how Ironic is just quietly buried away late in the album. To that point been some real bangers, and you think ok we’re winding down now, just a bit of filler to finish up. And that track just dials it back up to 11/10. I wonder if they knew what they had with that track at the time.

A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse
Faces
Had never heard of this band so came in completely cold. At first found I found it a bit bland and my mind was wandering. But Stay With Me grabbed me and the album really built from there. Debris and the Chuck Berry cover were great. So went back for a re-listen and it gets the thumbs up. Would enjoy having this on vinyl. Was fun learning after the lead is Rod Stewart. Cant decide whether I like his voice or not.

No thanks. Maybe there is something profound or interesting about their lyrics which I missed but musically it was boring and tedious. And calling yourself The Band is the height of wanker-ness.

Was excited for this, because if you don’t think Take Your Mama is a flat out timeless banger you literally have no ears. But somehow the album just didn’t quite live up. Maybe not as fun and energetic as I expected.

Eternally Yours
The Saints
Ripping album. Belter of an opener and the whole thing shreds from there. Made me want to down a few pints and thrash about in a sweaty pub bandroom. Really scratched an itch for me as have been getting more into punk rock recently. Story is so cool - formed in Brisbane & started out playing in their sharehouse because they couldn’t get any gigs. And basically went on to pioneer the genre in Australia and were even ahead of the emergence of the scene in the UK. It’s wild reading how influential & revered they were in the global punk movement. Can really hear their influence in some great current bands like Skeggs, Chats, Dune Rats & Amyl which have really owned that distinctive Aussie pub/ surfer rock sound which has had a massive revival over in the last decade. Must get this on vinyl.
Dad & Dust - both right up your alley!

(What's The Story) Morning Glory
Oasis
Whatever you think of Liam & Noel today, the Oasis story is undeniably cool. Emerging from working class obscurity to become a global rock phenomenon propelled by this specific album. The audacity of it is magical, to say ‘fuck it let’s go for the absolute pinnacle of the mountain’, because really these tracks only really work as epic singalongs in packed arenas. Some seem to knock them as pretty basic lyrics & tunes, but the genius of Wonderwall, DLBIA and Supernova is their transcendent quality is entirely dependent on the communal energy they create. There is an elegance and power to their raw youthful simplicity that taps into something deeply human. It pulls you into the choir, compels you to throw your arm around the person next to you and belt out the lyrics with joyous, melancholic gusto. Seeing them at their stadium shows later this year, with a good chunk of the crowd made up of drunk Brits steaming in from the Melbourne Cup, is going to be incredible.
