1001 Albums Summary

An absolute classic without doubt. You forget how many great songs are on this album. It drags in the final third a bit but it's still more than solid. Mitch Mitchell is incredible. Jazz drumming should be in rock music more often. Finesse.

Some brilliant songs and an original sound that no other band has ever really recreated. Some songs are forgettable though.

First 5 songs are... Killer. The rest pretty much a waste of time. Some absolute bangers for singles though and you can see why they went on to have the career they did, although I'm not sure they ever reached the heights on their debut (apart from maybe When you Were Young)...

Classic. Still holds up. I practically time travelled back to 2006 with its songs about arsehole bouncers and trying to pull girls on the dancefloor.

Best songs were the originals. She over sang and overplayed the covers. But you can clearly see why she's an icon. The voice is incredible and to become an icon at 45 years old at a time when older women were not in the cultural zeitgeist shows the power and appeal she had. However it's just not for me...

Not so much a sign of greater things to come for the band, but almost something that they left behind for chart success. My view is, both are great! This early prog stuff and the later era when they changed rock and pop music forever... Either way they have always pushed boundaries but stayed musically accessible and stuffed full of talent.
