I forgot how raw and DIY early Foo Fighters was. It makes sense given when it was made and where Dave Grohl came from. Enjoyable album - the hits are still classics.
At first the mix felt a little off here. Very thin. I think that sort of jangly mids and trebles mix was popular in the 80s but feels slightly jarring these days. On a second listen I turned it up more and the mix improved a fair bit. Album felt cohesive and delivered a lovely pop vibe. The 3 singles are clearly the standout tracks (with Hungry Like The Wolf head and shoulders above the other two).
I loved parts of this. Other parts were so self indulgent it became unenjoyable.
Really not sure how to rate this actually in a simple 1-5 rating. Kind of album that I think would be amazing on the 100th listen and is pretty good on the first.
Given it a 3. In hindsight Duran Duran should have been a 2 as this is taken from a list of classic albums. The voting system is not granular enough imo.
100% Radiohead getting into their weirder and more electronic music - Kind of a bridge between early stuff (Pablo Honey/Ok Computer/The Bends), which is structured much more like traditional rock music, and later experimental stuff (thinking of King of Limbs for example).
I like it as a Radiohead fan for this reason, but it is not my favourite. The more 'song' songs are, tellingly, the standouts. I Might Be Wrong is probably my favourite song on the album - The riff, drum groove, and vocals perfectly capture this transitional phase for the band. I think the album drops off a fair bit at the end, sadly.
Maybe not as accessible to non-Radiohead fans as other records by them.
Man. This is not a style I would listen to often but it is so well executed. Somewhere, probably in the Caribbean or jungle of South American where this is playing, and it literally the best album for that location.
I like Jazz. This is not exactly the kind of jazz I love, but it is pretty good. I found the mix pretty tricky in the car. Far too much mid/high end on the horns which was going through me a fair bit. However listening in the office with headphones was much more balanced. Not my favourite jazz albums so will get a three (yawn).
Mannish boy is so iconic that everyone knows coming up with some random off the cuff blues song to the tune.
This is an incredibly way to start an album and honestly I think it stays very high for quite a while. It is a bit samey so there is a bit of ear fatigue but I think that is a factor of the genre more than anything else.
Never listened to Muddy Waters in LP form but yeah this record is well put together.
The riffs are so good. This album is iconic for a reason. RIP Ozzy.
I did not really enjoy this much. I get that historically it might have a lot of influence, and generally they were performing American folk songs but compared to something like the Muddy Waters album it did not really hold up.
Started out strong, and I like other Beck stuff, but it petered out. Bit too avant-garde for a first time listen (says the Radiohead fan).
It was ok, I don’t really know the genre well but nothing grabbed me. Felt more like background music than club classics.
