1001 Albums Summary

Got some real classics, many songs I knew but hadn’t heard in an album context. Also some filler that is more generic 60s. Overall really solid.

I wanted to like this more than I did. Ray has an incredible, emotive voice but I found there were too many slow, ballady songs that, especially on a double album, made it feel draggy. Some of the more upbeat tracks were more interesting to me and it could have had more over the course of the album. Perhaps I should have listened to it in a different context, or this album is just a reflection of style of its time, but overall I was kind of bored of hearing slow songs about love.

I remember when my sister came home with this album when it came out. I borrowed a lot of her CDs but never this one. It’s really good! Some of the production is super 90s but the songwriting is timeless. Susan’s House, Not Ready Yet, and Guest List are standouts on first listen, alongside (obviously) Novocaine for the Soul. Will give this a few more spins soon.

Not for me. It’s not bad, just very generic. Don’t really get why this stands out enough to make it on this list.
