I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this record! Well I of course know songs like ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’ and ‘Shout’ I kinda figured the rest would just be filler or simply fall in the shadow of those hits.
Yet the whole record is het extremely delicately put together! From the lyrics to the production and instrumentals!
Yes it’s heavenly 80’s coded, which sometimes feels kinda corny and clunky? Yet I have to remind myself that all the modern retro 80’s sounds are inspired by this, and that Tears for Fears have created a timeless sound of music.
With heavy synths, sometimes a surprising shredding guitar, heavy toms filled drums, some trumpets and beautiful piano this thing is full! Every track feels so bombastic and huge, while also leaving spaces to built some suspension.
The vocals are great and sound like something that would fit on a cure or smiths album, yet they’re so daring by going completely different sonical directions.
Love this, very cool. Head Over Heels/Over, even though I knew it a little already, is probably my standout track: so delicately produced.
Very interesting record.
I cannot really give this a fair review since the cultural difference and differences in language make it hard to fully grasp what this record is about.
Yet it’s so cool to hear these blues tracks with all these inspirations and inputs that are far beyond my knowledge.
You can hear how this is different from your regular American blues and I love that’s it’s so easy so hear that difference.
Loved the guitar play and the vocals were great, especially all those half notes mixed in there.
Not something I would really come back to, yet still glad I got to experience this and make it a part of my musical knowledge and feeling!
Listen, I absolutely love Pink Floyd but this… this aint it.
I absolutely love most of their work this one just feels off. I love their Pompeii stuff specifically because it lacks vocals, telling the story with their amazing musical talents.
IMaybe it’s cause I did not see the film, but everything about this seems so theatrical to me. While the music is still great, comfortably numb is one of my favorite guitar solo’s of all time, it just lacks that mystery.
Not for me I guess, loved some tracks but I vividly remember now why this never was one of my favorite records of theirs.
(i HATE ‘the Trial’ it’e whimisical and goofy, that’s not why I listen to them)
I wouldn’t say I’m much of a Blur fan and this record didn’t fix that.
I don’t know what it is but none of the chords or notes just really hit? There’s some nice guitar play but the use of electronics, brass sections and the overal vocale just feel a little to whimsy for me.
There are some sick moments, but in general I just cringe.
Wow i actually love this record! Of course I’d seen the cover before but I guess I just never came around to actually checking it out.
While the instrumentals are quit simple, it does strike a nostalgic string and it feels so warm and fuzzy.
The lyrics are such a creative way of talking about theme’s like love and loneliness.
Maybe it just also hit me at the right time, but this was a pleasant surprise!!
This shit is OLD! So automatically in a musical sense it’s a little too old for me, but I’m so surprised how some of these songs still manage to be relatable. Guess some things never change, heartbreak will always suck.
Still decent, very cool to hear in the context of how music has changed, probably wont ever listen again!!
I gotta be honest here, I’m heavily biased because I’m a Smiths fan.
I love how much this band managed to do in such a short time. Not liking each other a whole lot made quit hard to get together.
This record was the last time they did so before splitting up with no chance of a reunion.
It may not their most defined album, it lacks some form of cohesion or narrative at times but sonically it feels like a step forward for the band. It’s a little rougher and wilder with freaky riffs and drums. Yet Morrissey manages to still keep it melancholic and a tad whiny.
This has some of my favorite songs, tho I never really admired this album was a whole. It leaves some things to admire but it’s still really good final record, glad they decided to stop after this an end on a high note.
