Enjoyed this one, some solid catchy rock that does feel foretelling of some of the 2000s rock to follow. On second listen I enjoyed it even more, guitar riffs and harmonies are just so nice. Title track is definitely my favorite, just has some really great lines in there (“I’m glad I came here with your pound of flesh” is a favorite of mine).Glad I listened to this and got an introduction to Courtney Love and Hole, hadn’t actually listened to them before this so this was a nice glimpse into her style.
Doesn’t get much better than this. This could be Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits album. No skips. No notes. Okay, I do have one note— I don’t understand how “Silver Springs” was left off of this album, I feel like it’d be right at home here in content and quality. On this listen, Christine McVie's "Songbird" really stuck out to me in a way it hasn't before-- it's so tragically romantic, expressing your love for someone despite knowing you will never be together again. I was unaware until today that "The Chain" was the only song on the album with all members credited as writers, and it truly feels like the perfect culmination of all of their pent-up anger and feelings of betrayal. As Logan said, "it sounds like they're in their Rep era."
Favorite tracks: Second Hand News, Never Going Back Again, Songbird, The Chain, I Don't Want to Know (and Silver Springs if they actually included it on the album of course).
Jammin! I love these guitar sounds, the first track sounds like a remixed my bloody valentine song at first which I really enjoyed. This genre is not always my cup of tea, sometimes there’s too much happening that it can feel muddled for me, but I enjoyed this one! The high-tempo breakbeat drums on “As Heaven Is Wide” got me rockin out a little. Not my favorite album but still a solid alt-rock record. If David Fincher was a girl (or at least had more female-centric movies earlier in his career), it feels like this would play in the background.
Favorite tracks: Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, As Heaven is Wide, Not My Idea, Stupid Girl
Paul Simon the man that you are. Short king legend and amazing songwriter. He may not have been dunkin’ on the court, but Duncan he did, and it’s so good! “Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard” genuinely never grows old, that light guitar and cuica combo is unmatched. Might be close to a 5 for me if it didn’t have to compete with Bridge Over Troubled Water, Bookends, and Graceland.
Favorite Tracks: Mother and Child Reunion, Duncan, Armistice Day, Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Congratulations
Full disclosure, didn’t actually listen to the full album today BUT I am still writing a review because I’ve listened to this album before and just want to rave about it. Every track feels so emotionally charged, you feel the deep sadness in “After the Gold Rush” and “Birds” and the absolute anger in “Southern Man.” On top of that, the harmonies elevate this album to another level. Personally “Harvest” is my favorite Neil Young record but this might be a close second.
Favorite Tracks: After the Gold Rush, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Southern Man, Birds, When You Dance I Can Really Love, Cripple Creek Ferry
Sidenote: Neil Young took all of his music off of Amazon Music to protest against big ole Bezos and while it’s understandable, it means he’s kind of exited my rotation a little, visiting these songs on YouTube reminded me what I was missing out on.
Love the energetic, frenetic drumming often found in these metal albums, the almost overstimulating nature seems to calm me for some reason. Metal really feels like the most maximalist music, really cramming as much drum into every fill, as much guitar riff into every solo, and as much scream into every vocal. Musically, I really enjoy this. Lyrically, it’s alright, sometimes it’s a bit too much. Also, sometimes metal singers sound like Cookie Monster to me and that’s pretty funny. Anyways, I’m adding this to my workout repertoire.
WOW!!! Love love love this one! Really haven’t listened to Girls Just Want to Have Fun in a while and it’s so much better than I remember. Every song on this album is 80s banger after banger. Didn’t even realize GJWHF is a cover and Lauper flipped the script on the original meaning. Anyways, it’s a perfect 80s pop record.
Favorite tracks: Money Changes Everything, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Time After Time, She Bop, All Through the Night, He’s So Unusual
Rockin’ punk album. Only gave it one listen, will 100% be revisiting. I know it’s technically not on the OG album but man Gary Gilmore’s Eyes is so good.
The best solo Beatles album????
Beautiful. Brightened my day and will easily work its way into my rotation. Just a lovely album created by some lovely musicians.
