In A Silent Way by Miles Davis
Dec 11 2025

Striking use of background organ and piano under jazz solos at the start of the album - often discordant at several points, making the otherwise repeating/simple elements of the music still seem fresh. I also enjoyed the repeating, fast paced elements in the tracks, especially the drums and bass. I know such repetition is not exceptional in the genre, but I really enjoyed its execution in this particular album. The use of guitar throughout is very pretty. It conveyed tone in a very sweet way. infact, all of the songs' intros were very pretty, I think mainly due to the way slow pace and not over-the-top improvisation. this style was best seen in the concluding song of the album, I think. the xylophone was also really nice sounding as well. im not that familiar with jazz, but from what ive heard of the genre the album doesn't seem that innovative (other than its use of electric instruments, which was probs unique in its time). however, that's not necessarily a bad thing, as what the album does do it does very well. The songs flow together and convey emotion very well, at times being fast/exciting and other times very peaceful. overall, i really enjoyed the album, and think of it very highly.

Surf's Up by The Beach Boys
Jan 07 2026

Wasn't bad but I didn't enjoy the album at all. If it was on at a party I wouldn't complain, but I'd never willingly listen to this.

Jan 09 2026

Really enjoyed Redding's singing (although, it's more due to me liking soul singing than Redding being specifically exceptional). The songs weren't particularly interesting beyond that, though. The instrumentation did fit well with the singing and was pleasant, but over the whole album it felt quite repetitive. For soul, I prefer the instrumentation to be technically complex, which means I wasn't quite a fan and got bored fairly quick

With The Beatles by Beatles
Jan 11 2026

I haven't listened to that much Beatles previously, so this album was very interesting in that it helped me understand how they were so influential. While the album did have a common feel throughout, each song felt distinctly unique. One aspect I particularly liked was the drumming and guitar - it seems distinctly bluesy, most notably with the guitar in Roll Over Beethoven. Maybe it's just because I've listened to a lot of reggae and soul (meaning that's the influence I recognise), but the album really felt like something coming out of that genre rather than anything I'd expect from rock. In particular, Hold Me Tight felt quite reggae. In any case, I enjoyed this album more than I expected. It isn't in my normal genres, but I'd listen to it again. Probably a 7/10 for me, so I'll give it a 4.

Illmatic by Nas
Jan 12 2026

A lot more enjoyable than I expected. Scrumptious instrumentation that complemented nas' voice in rap. 4/5, only loses a point because I don't actually enjoy the sound of rap when compared to other singing tech

Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Jan 13 2026

It was decent but not something I'd listen to again, 3.5/5

Odelay by Beck
Jan 14 2026

Very impressed. Derelict is one of the best songs I've heard that incorporates Indian classical - the pair of sarangi (I think? Hard to tell with effects) and the keherwa taal tabla interlude was genuinely stunning, and fit amazingly well into the flow of the song. Very inspirational song. More generally, the discordant music style was fun to listen to, and thoroughly interesting. The metal sound effects did start to get stale tbf (Beck must have a lot of metal pipes), but they were quite funny. I think it's a 4.3 for me. It was very enjoyable to listen to and was also quite inspirational, but it isn't an album I'd listen to on repeat.

Bad by Michael Jackson
Jan 17 2026

Really enjoyed it, very enjoyable singing style.

Kid A by Radiohead

Was mid. Didn't hate any part of it and there was a couple of cool guitary bits, but I really wouldn't listen again.
