What's Going On by Marvin Gaye
Dec 17 2025

This is a pretty universally highly-rated album, topping lists like Rolling Stone’s 2020 & 2023 Best Albums of All Time Lists. The album is pretty short, only 9 songs long, and each of them is pretty good. The best is the title track, which is just an all-time song. Gaye’s reaction to the Vietnam War and the reactions to it’s protests can be pasted onto many modern movements, and certainly have. It’s also just a really fun listen! The other tracks on here didn’t quite meet the heights of this one, but every time I started to tune out, a new groovy section came in and rocked my socks off! Listening to this as a complete album is the ideal way to listen to it, though. It's a concept album, so all the songs flow into each other in themes and musically, creating a really unique sonic experience you'd miss out on if you weren't listening this way.

A great album from an artist I love that I have ashamedly never listened to all the way through. I got to find some deeper cut favorites that I didn't know I loved and they're surrounded by great hits like "Changes" and "Life On Mars?"
