nope, nope, nope! I didn’t get this album in the 80’s …. and I still can’t find much to enjoy! (chorus of let’s go crazy and when doves cry - although it does go on a bit- are the only listenable moments!) Purple Rain is an album that actually hurts my ears to listen too!
Listening to this made me want to jump on a motorbike and ride into the sunset - iconic hooks, heartfelt ballads and energetic rock magic!
You don’t have to be affected by drugs and alcohol to listen to this, but I think it might help… When I listened to the first track I was ready for a whiskey sour and a pack of sobranie blacks…. but very quickly I found myself wondering if I just didn’t get Miles and after the mammoth 27minute titular track I wasn’t sure what had just happened - much like waking with hangxiety after a wild night and not sure what happened the previous evening… I actually enjoyed moments when I leant into it and didn’t overthink it, but I value being sober too much to listen to this album again!
it’s no “automatic for the people”, but still a great listen with a couple of fav’s … happy to reminisce and revisit this
I would never have picked this album but it was super fun to listen and dance to while I cooked dinner for the famaroo! I don’t know why I enjoyed it, but I did!
I have never heard of him, and this was my first introduction to John Martyn. These songs are haunting, mesmerising, delicate, complex and considered … go down easy is masterful …. I was very sad to read he struggled with addiction and violence throughout his life, there is a gentle but somewhat sorrowful beauty in this album.
can’t … I want to be able to listen to the album, but this is just not for me and after a 3rd attempt I am bailing after just 3 songs …. the bits I listened too do not sound like 90’s and are very reminiscent of 70’s David Bowie (who I am not that fussed about either) … it’s a hard pass from me.
always a bit of fun- not on regular rotation for me, but happy to listen if the mood is right!
this album might be good background music for dinner parties where there are too many guests to be able to talk properly and/or noisy kitchen … it’s not completely unlistenable with a few chill tracks but it has some real crap in there too.
yank crime? more like wank crime … it’s a no from me.
Not awesome but now awful.
this sounds like 14 year old kids who have made their own band and practice in the music room at lunchtimes, writing their own songs, that sound boring and borrow riffs and structure from other well known songs. Dexy’s were clearly only a novelty one hit wonder number band
ahhhh …. this takes me straight back to highschool orchestra camp when we listened to this album on cassette tape non stop …. I like a few of the songs (blister, confessions, kiss off etc) but it’s not really a constant rotation album … and possibly I have given it an extra star for nostalgic memories!
fuck yes! I have never really listened to a full Janis album - what a legend!
ooooh…. now this is more like it! love love love ❤️
it’s good for what it is - not one for me
cannot get enough of this!
this was perfect afternoon listening on a hot summers day! it is a little wannabe tony joe white but not as good - still enjoyed most of it!
wooooah! this is is a wild ride - gritty and raw … I’m here for it as a high energy listen!
aside from the new orleans instrumental track, this is a great listen …. so many lovely memories of this album and it still holds up as a comforting listen. Stand out track and still one of my favourite songs ever is “night swimming” …. honestly not a die hard REM fan, but have much love for this particular album!
interesting …. I can appreciate it for what it is, but not my jam… I really liked listening to the less popular tracks - he was such a poet & I had no idea! the psychedelic rock genre is not really for me though!
why is this album considered so good? I didn’t really enjoy it - not the worst so far, but ultimately not going to get another listen from me.
