1001 Albums Summary

A fan of this genre, I know I will have pleasant things to say about it. There's something about this album that feels more in touch with grunge's punk roots than most any other grunge project I have heard. Coming from the present day, knowing gigantic was the single feels so wrong because where is my mind became such a bigger song for the band. It runs the gambit from melodic, spacey, almost psychedelic songs to abrasive, in your face, yelling. The sound of this album is so unique that it is hard to judge in comparison to anything. On its own, it stands as an experimental entry to what punk was becoming at the time and should be experienced much like one has to see a Duchamp work, wrong and right in unexpected ways.

Nina Simone, the woman you are. She starts the album off in a song that is more rock and roll than most of her catalogue. Immediately following the rock and roll she goes into four women, a song with so much meaning. Simone then moves from this powerful song of black archetypes of the America's pre-civil rights era to a mellow ballad of love, a theme that sticks throughout the album. Passion is the primary theme through this album. passion for civil rights, passion for love.

I am not known to listen to much Common. The few songs of his I have listened to are really just features and aren't long-lasting interests of mine. I am pleasantly surprised by the bright, hopeful tone in the album, delivered beautifully by kanye and j dilla's production. The inclusion of a live song is a wild choice that I don't think anyone has done in this way.
