Has some great blues inspired songs. I’ve also always loved the use of the keys in The Doors music. Love Her Madly has a great chorus change up that I really enjoyed. Definitely some classics on this record.
Always a classic. One of my favorites from Radiohead. Nude is one of the most hauntingly beautiful but sad songs. The mellow guitar work by Greenwood on that track always fills me joy, juxtaposing the melancholy of the track. That’s all to say nothing of Yorke’s subtly intense vocal work across the whole record. All I Need, Reckoner, Videotape, 15 Step, a great handful of tracks from this iconic outfit.
One of the most unmistakable bands from their era. I don’t actually listen to TH that much, but listening to this record for the first time may change that. Everyone knows Psycho Killer, but there are some other great tracks here that I’ve never heard. The Book I Read was a standout for me, along with First Week/Last Week…Carefree. The opening track grabbed me immediately. Byrnes vocals are identifiable right away with his herky jerky highs. I feel like you either love it or hate it, but the chops and melodies of this record surprised me as I always just think of Byrnes voice as the singular driver of TH, but I feel a bit differently now.
I didn’t get all the way through this one. I’ve never really been much of Thin Lizzy fan, and this live album did nothing to change that for me.
I’ve never really liked The Police much and I’m not a huge Sting fan either. I do like Any Other Day. This suburban guys days just goes to shit over a pretty happy upbeat melody. The sort of “island” type influence on this record is interesting and not something I expected. This Beds Too Big Without You sounds like a new guitarist who heard reggae for the first time. Definitely not a great track, but I guess in 1979 a British pop band doing this would’ve done something for some people. Yeah overall, I find Sting’s vocal melodies just awkward in general. Case in point, the last track on this album. I get it’s supposed to be frantic, but Jesus. I don’t like it.
I’ll always fuck with Jack White. Red Rain is a banger. He’s at his best when he’s laying it down like that. Not my favorite from The White Stripes, but def solid. The piano on the last track is friggin great. 3.5
Whoa. These dudes would’ve loved the film Whiplash. Kind of a messy record to me, but I’m not really one for jazz. I think it was Keith Richards who said that solos are forgettable, but a good lick or melody is forever. I fall into that category of music listener. That said, I actually kind of like this album. It spans jazz, organ improvisation, some blues, opens with a classical cover, some crazy jazz drumming and I’m pretty sure I heard the riff of Sunshine of My Love on the last track. Whew. I do really enjoy the guys vocals, and this is certainly one of the most interesting classic rock era albums I have ever listened to. I won’t reach for it often, but I’m happy to have been introduced.
You don’t have to convince me. This has been one of my favorite albums since it released when I was in high school. It’d be tough to find a better debut album from any band in the 2000s. Jon Theodore’s drumming, Cedric’s falsetto, Omar’s brilliant composition, bizarre and mysterious songe writing, and his guitar prowess make The Mars Volta a special group. There’s nothing really like them. I’m glad this record made this list.
A classic from my childhood. I’ve never been a huge fan of Greenday, but if I was to have a favorite record of theirs it would be Dookie for sure.
Dang. This album slaps. I’ve always loved BB King, but I don’t ever remember listening to this album. The energy of the crowd, his voice and guitar, the band. It all comes together beautifully on this album. The recording is really good too considering it was recorded in 1965. I just wish it was longer.
Great record. The Temptations are awesome. I think most people just know them for their Smoky cover album and their doowop style tunes, which are great, but this shows a more down and dirty side of the group. The love ballads are still there, the strings and great musical production but also here are the references to The Struggle. The parts of life which are hard and rough, but are made better through finding love (or losing it). Great, timeless music that I think is one of the best showcases of purely American art that’s ever been created.
I have always found Wilco to be utterly and hopelessly boring. This album to me is no different. And it’s a friggin double record. Jesus Christ. I know they are popular, but I just cannot ever figure out why. Most of the songs are musically boring from everything I’ve heard by them, I’m not really a fan of Jeff Tweedy’s voice. They are just a really, really generic sounding band. All are completely competent musicians, but they don’t ever seem to do anything interesting with their talent. I get some of the heartfelt, bygone era, missing home type lyrics. That’s all well and good, it’s just not for me in this moment. Maybe one day they will resonate with me, but it is not this day.
Dang! What a super psychedelic album. I’m honestly pretty shocked that these dudes didn’t make it big in the states. I guess they were overshadowed by The Stones, The Who and The Beatles. As far as I know, I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of this music besides the first song, which is a banger. I definitely need to listen to it again here soon, but I really enjoyed it. Some very British narration stuff that can be annoying, but probably enjoyable if you’re on acid. Or scary, idk. I may experiment with that one day.
This album sounds so innocent compared to the rap that I grew up listening to haha. It’s a classic for sure, but not something that I listen to often. You can’t deny the foundations of Hip Hop though, this one will always stand as the classic that it is.
Shining Star is an all time feel good Mo Town banger. Great way to open the album up. I’ve always liked EW&F.
Some classic blues! Pretty upbeat style blues. I enjoyed it.
Haven’t listened much yet, but I wasn’t vibing with it from what I did. Il have to swing back at some point.
I like some funk, not so much for jazz. It’s just never resonated with me. This album has some really fun grooves and sounds though nonetheless.
