Third album I ever owned. Probably could karaoke the entire album.
Definitely a product of the MTV music era. While still enjoyable to listen to, their earlier albums are better from a blues oriented perspective. This was their biggest commercial success fueled by great videos with recurring visual themes in all the videos. Great sing-along songs throughout. Definitely some fluff amongst the jewels ( tv dinners for example). 3 1/2 stars rounded up
Nothing stood out to me. Not the vocals, lyrics, guitars, drums…. Admittedly I am not a fan of grunge, but there is a reason Hole doesn’t have the hits that, say, Nirvana had. Didn’t hate it but nothing note worthy.
Never heard of them before so didn’t know what to expect. Heard hints of reggae, funk, hip hop, dance, prog rock,…. A little of everything. Sections reminded me of Enigma’s MCMXC (1990) album (music not the monks chanting). Probably wouldn’t seek it out, but would listen to it again.
Listened to the first 3. Scanned the next few. Read lyrics of a few more. Ugh. Couldn’t stomach more. Vocal tune followed the beat but not the music. Reminded me of a poorly written HS musical with no logical plot. Jazz by people who have no talent
Not horrible. Not memorable. Similar to Muse or Coldplay
Recognized the first and last song. Cisco kid was longer than I remembered. A Little Rock/funk. Can see where j Geils got some influences
3.5 rounded up. As a Clapton fan, this was a fun listen for me. Not a fan of the lsd infused music genre 9especially the vocals) but not all the songs sounded like that. Ginger baker drumming….. nice. (Did you know he lived in Parker for close to 10 years?
There’s prog rock and then there is very prog rock…. This was like ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer for the uninitiated) turned up to 11. I like jazz but not the arrhythmic jam session type. This very much reminded me of that. I understand it is key album in the overall prog movement, but not my cup of tea.
Was familiar with a coupleKraftwerks albums already. Not this one. Not sure why this one was chosen over some of the others that they’ve done. Wasn’t their first. Wasn’t their best. However, that being said, a prime example of their work and why they are on the list as leaders in the electronic dance music genre.
Nice. Easy to listen to without too much effort. However, if you start listening with intent, you immediately begin to pick up on the artistry and talent of the individual performers. Never had any experience with this music of his yet however, I recognized the melody from a train. Would listen again.
Lots of memories associated with this album. First introduction to it was in high school by classmates. It’s been a while and only recognized three of the songs. Seemed longer than I remembered. Maybe I had more patience back then. Stoners across the hall in college borrowed it (a lot). lol. Worth the time to listen and will likely stick it back in my rotation.
Hints of punk, No Doubt, couple of other bands. Vocalist’s voice eventually became grating to my ears. Songs were mildly entertaining but I found them ultimately “blah” without a variety of change. Yet another example of an album in this list that I don’t understand why it’s in this list. 1 1/2 stars
