TT better than I remembered, lovely outro into JellyBelly, Billy's voice still kinda annoying me but I love those chords out of chorus. Very lovely strings, very epic opening. Jelly Belly is the kind of pumpkins I hate, mindlessly thrashy, Billy's whiney twang just doesn't suit heavier material for me. Some great little progressions in between large swathes of messy 4 chord guitar sections. Good solo. Also could be my speakers, but this sounds MUDDDDYYYY. Likely intentional but still. Zero is a classic, fucking love those harmonics and will forever. However jesus I didn't realise how much of the problem I had with the pumpkins was Billy's dumb fucking voice. Here is no why, forgettable instantly. BWBF is a ripper, no surprises there, Billy ends up with a bit of edge in this one. To forgive and Ode to No One, to be honest, spaced out on these ones, I was too busy googling fucked up stories of Billy during the late 2000s when it seemed to be his mission to ruin every tour he went on. Funny stuff. Came back for Love, a pseudo-electronic nu-punk thing, kinda slams in the verses, well mixed, surprised by this one. Billy needs more processing on other tracks, I think half the time the problem is his voice is just floating over the top of a lot of low and low-middle end in these tracks and it's just all you can hear. Cupid de Locke immediately a breath of fresh air with some pretty strings. Galapogos is a nice song, softer, slower, art rock stuff just suits Billy better, the guitar gets to shine, can hear more rhythm in the bass. Muzzle, another song that sounds exactly like every other song, soft, loud, soft. Porcelina, cool guitar sound in the chorus, I literally cannot stop thinking about Billy's voice once again, how little it fits. take me down my fav song I didn't already know, obviously beach boys or generally 60s pop inspired, it's pleasant, especially after approximately 50 minutes of 90s guitar driven art rock, I would expect more variety from a self proclaimed concept album, let alone one inspired by the White Album. 1979 is a song for me that is incredibly overplayed, but came as a breath of fresh aire after an hour and 20 of stuff I was just not interested in. Tales of a Scorched Earth not bad. Thru the Eyes of Ruby genuinely I think one of my fav songs on the album, clean, classic rock, great riff with some cool very 70s psychedelia stuff going on, Billy is reasonably mixed with some backup singing to help him out, i also actually don't mind it's length. It's a shame this is such a negative review, I don't like not liking things, I just expected such an acclaimed record to offer me more than the 4 singles I already knew. A couple of very pretty transitional and interlude songs in there I liked a lot, but for the most part I think this album is, for one, PAINFULLY long, Billy and the producers should be shot after including 2 hours of music on this record. There's a very good reason not many bands do, if this record had ended on 1979 I would have walked away going "Not bad!" but instead I'm subjected to another 45 minutes of torturous nothings narrated by one of my least favourite voices in 90's alternative rock. I think a huge part of this listen was expectations, for such critical success, I just really don't see the big deal. I have read a lot about the commercialisation of the music industry and music journalism reaching it's height around this time being a reason, hipsters casting into the ever receding tides of 90s popular music trying to reel in something meaningful, large, poetic, and reeling in something, indeed large, gargantuan, but inedbile. There is just no helping feeling that 2 thirds of the album could be cut and the album would be much better.
