Kate experimented extensively with sound, using synthesizers, drum machines, and sampling, combining them with traditional instrumental recordings. She also embraced unusual ideas. The first half was reminiscent of popular music, with songs inspired by layers of horror films, autobiographical literature, and childhood memories. But the second, which she called the Ninth Wave Suite, was a concept album telling the story of a girl thrown overboard at sea. The main challenge for journalists was defining the genre. It's a fusion of numerous experiments and relatively harmonious ones. It's a fusion of rock, prog, synth-pop, and folk influences. Irish musicians using traditional musical instruments set a special mood.
