I appreciate the way skits are used to add context & establish the mood for the songs. However, as I'm very interested in human performance and music theory, the constant presence of samples doesn't appeal to me.

It's nice to hear an older example of theatrical rock! The dramatic vocals, synth samples, and violin interludes borrow composition cues from film soundtracks and reinterpret them through the lens of rock. The drums and guitar are featured on every track, being sure not to stray too far from the typical 90s sound.

Always a great listen!

Ellington at Newport by Duke Ellington
May 06 2026

Duke Ellington really understands how to manage the ebb and flow of a tune. Each rendition on this record is absolutely breathtaking. The band is completely in sync as they follow the pull of the music, managing complex dynamics and outstanding solos with grace.
