Only gets better as it goes. Starts pretty hokey 80s, to be honest (sorry, Paul McCartney) but the middle third is the stuff of legend. You can see Michael metabolizing learned sounds (funk, R&B, 80s pop, etc.) and beginning to distill him into his own sound.

This album made me respect RHCP and elevate them beyond a kinda douchey bro band. At its worst, it sounds like Mötley Crue. At its best, it makes you understand why anyone would ever want to live in California.
Folk rock is just never as good as straight folk. I’ve heard better, and it’s so self-serious, even though it’s good and has some standout tracks. Bookended by the best, the middle I could take or leave… actually, mostly leave.
Unfortunately* really good. Looser than other psych records, but emblematic for a reason. Best when it's bluesy (other than Sunshine Of Your Love, obviously).
*I hate handing Eric Clapton any wins.
"Cecilia Ann" is an important link on the surf-rock-to-shoegaze axis. Kim Deal is such a big part of what makes the Pixies awesome. Starts strong and then kind of fizzles out, drags, but a fun record.
I truly do not get the hype. French dudes pressing buttons. Nothing feels revelatory or transformational, just sort of atmospheric. Like a school project in places.

"Religion" is tiresome and feels juvenile, though maybe I just roll my eyes inherently at these RaDiCaL aNtI-ReLiGiOn screeds—they seem passé and low-hanging fruit. Maybe I'm not being fair.
