Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
May 08 2026

I listened to this while working in my home office. It was pleasant enough and faded into the background. Except for "Take Five", which is iconic, no tracks jumped out to me. I'd listen to this as background music any time. Beige.

Funeral by Arcade Fire
May 11 2026

Can't believe it has been 20+ years. I still think of Arcade Fire as a cool and modern band to listen to. Neighborhood #3, Wake Up, and Rebellion (Lies) are the popular tracks, with the latter being my favorite. I'm not able to analyze music or write intelligently about it, but the songs build up in a unique way. The sound is iconic of early 2000's indie. Great music for pumping yourself up against the world. Not sure it's for me anymore.

May 12 2026

Double album, with Big Boi on Speakerboxxx and Andre 3000 on The Love Below. Obviously, the hit tracks are "The Way You Move," "Hey Ya!", and "Roses." What surprised me were the varied number of features from Killer Mike to JAY-Z to Norah Jones and the list goes on. Andre 3000 has quite a sense of humor and a singing voice for different, jazzy styles of music. The album is fun and feels like a play with many acts.

KIWANUKA by Michael Kiwanuka
May 13 2026

So good! I need to go back and unpack this album some more, but it was the best recommendation so far. The voice and music sounded retro and vintage in all the best ways. I felt it was a mix of Air and Leon Bridges. "You Ain't the Problem," "Rolling," and "Hero" are my favorite tracks on first listen.

Violator by Depeche Mode
May 14 2026

I groaned when I saw this one. I don't think of myself as a Depeche Mode guy. I was surprised by all the iconic hits on this one, basically defining the 90's for me: "Personal Jesus," "Enjoy the Silence," and "Policy of Truth." The other tracks are brooding, atmospheric, and worth a listen. I liked "Blue Dress."

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy
May 15 2026

Enjoyed this. I had no idea Thin Lizzy was Irish! They do a good job of sounding America. I really liked "Still in Love with You."

The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails
May 16 2026

I'm not a NIN guy and this album didn't help. I can recognize the hits and appreciate their relevance but the dark industrial sound and graphic lyrics make for a not enjoyable listening experience.

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
May 19 2026

Wonderful album to listen to. Only 4 tracks but every track is long and meanders. The second track is tattooed into my mind, as it was a backing track to the 90's skate video "Mouse." Wonderful to see things come full circle!

Gasoline Alley by Rod Stewart
May 21 2026

I forget about 70's Rod Stewart. I liked it. I'd listen to this anytime.

May 22 2026

Not my thing. I turned it off at track 4 or 5 with the horror lyrics. I'm sure there is historical context to this album. I'll read about it some day. Doesn't stand on its own.
