I mean, these were remastered so every single instrument sounded just as loud as the other. Blitzkrieg bop is a banger I guess but the rest just felt okayish. It's one of those albums that people who grew up with it probably loves and for younger people it's kinda meh. I'd give 2,5 if I could.
Interesting channel mixing, remaster isn't terrible. Songs are okay I guess, it's Beatles so the historical significance is rather obvious. It's also pretty obvious this album is from a point where people had stopped saying "no" to the band because some of the songs should never have left the writer's table (dishonourable mention to "Michelle" here for example), but ah well. Yet another 2,5 which tips to a 3 because of mixing and some upbeat and non-misogynistic songs.
No. This music is not for me. I don't find too many redeeming qualities in it honestly. Listening to it though it surprises me how people who were around Ian Curtis somehow were surprised by his unfortunate demise. Did they have ears back then? And if yes, why didn't they use them? Even I, who really don't like this kind of music, can hear that basically every song is a cry for help.
"Where will it end?" as he cries out. Luckily for me, it only lasted a day. Rest in peace Ian.
I knew of Steely Dan but never really listened. Quite funky! It's not the best I've heard but not bad at all. Some tracks are a little bit too much elevator music for my tastes. As soon as the opening track "Black cow" starts playing I realize where Chris Sawyer got the musical inspiration when selecting music for the tycoon-games, most prominently Transport Tycoon - trivia for the nerds I guess. No real outstanding track but also none that stands out in a negative way makes this a solid 3,5 for my tastes, rounding down to 3 because I know there'll be a lot of more albums actually worth a 4 in this list.
Confession time: I was a Metallica fan around the early to mid 90s. So there's that. Anyway, this is a pretty good rock album, but you can also tell it's from the 80s and a debut one - it's not exactly the most complicated composition, more of the wailing guitars-thing being quite prevalent at the time. I do like wailing guitars though, so 3,5 rounded down due to lack of variety and complexity.
It's not that every song sounds exactly the same, albeit many of them do, it's that every song just isn't very good. PJ's voice can generously be described as "soulful", less well-meaning listeners would call it "willing but not able". It's just a rather boring but not horrible album.
You will have to like the Hammond organ to like this record. I do like it, to a degree where I have no problems saying that more is more. Therefore I like this album quite a lot, since that's exactly what's served. Listening to this album, except for recognising that song, you'll probably also be able to trace a lot of sounds and harmonies from more contemporary music which is kinda nice. It's a 3,5 for me tipping to 4 because like the cookie monster likes cookies I like the Hammond.
Honestly I expected worse coming into this one. Nick Cave always stuck me as a poor man's Matt Berninger. This record did not change that opinion, but Nick's doing alright too. It's not bad, just rather boring. Songs sound about the same throughout, similar pace and chord progressions. A solid 3. Ish.
A highly average album by a highly average band. No idea why it is on this list, there's literally nothing special about it? It's not bad, it's definitely not good either, just bland? It's okay, not every painting must be Mona Lisa, but they also better not end up on this list. So there; if you like music played in strict 4/4 rhythm (I didn't listen super closely but I couldn't hear the drums playing even halves at any point in the album, lol) I guess it's fine. For me it's a 1,5 only saved by the fact that I still expect "true" 1's later on.
Country as it should be. Story telling about hard lives, not some gunslinging yeehaw driving my pickup to Costco-shit. That is to say that this is pretty good even for someone like me who's not really into the genre in the first place. A solid 3-3,5 for me - would surely have been more if I was more into the genre.
I didn't know what to expect coming into this album; I've mostly heard Leonard's hits. As I was listening I realised the few expectations I had were mostly true though; quite a pleasant voice, songs rather slow and mellow kinda thing. I have to admit it was better than I expected though, so props for that. A solid 3 for me.
Not really my type of music. It feels like an unpolished Arctic monkeys album. Which is probably fair considering the album's genre and release date. I can't help escape the feeling that it's not very appetising in the 2020s however. If you like(d) this kind of music back when, this album was probably a 4. Today, considering my own tastes, it's a 2.
