1001 Albums Summary

How do you follow up an album like Nevermind? Simple truth: you don't. Luckily, Kurt Cobain and companions realized this. Most artists that find mainstream success shift their sound towards pop. Nirvana did the opposite, all polish from Nevermind is gone, replaced by a harshness that even the most extreme of purists would call punk. Add in the refreshed lyrical style Cobain adopted, and even fully tone-deaf listeners can feel the anger behind these songs.

I can appreciate the technical skill on display, but none of the songs feel like they have much purpose to them. It feels more like a jam session they happened to have recorded.

Having established themselves as one of the main Britpop powerhouses, all Blur had to do to cement themselves as all-time greats was to reinvent themselves. Refreshing their sound, while retaining their quality. And, well, they did exactly that on this self-titled album.
