Songs employ wall of sound with synthy instruments that gives great depth to the sound, then momentarily reduced to intimate stretches of minimal instrumentalism behind Chris Martin's pained voice. The best song on the album works oppositely, starting with Chris Martin and a piano, then building up to an enveloping crescendo. - "The Scientist" I can't deny the skill in production and the powerful arrangements that pair so well with Martin's inherently melancholy voice, but I don't usually go for music that sounds so polished. "Clocks" uses more traditional instrumentation and faster rhythm, standing out among the rest of the album.
