I wasn't too enthusiastic about this. Most of the Manchester bands sound pretty much the same and I preferred the Stone Roses to this. It was OK for background music, but all the songs had a "sameness" quality to them. It would be great as background ambiance in some 90s hipster club. But listening to it at home, I couldn't get into it.

Station To Station by David Bowie
Sep 01 2026

Not my favorite Bowie record, but still has two of my very favorite Bowie songs: Golden Years and the very under-rated TVC15. Stay is a great deep cut.

Rip It Up by Orange Juice

Not too interested in this. Reminds me of early 10,000 Maniacs: extremely white bread ska / reggae and fairly mediocre playing. None of the songs grabbed me.

Here's Little Richard by Little Richard
Sep 03 2026

Have to take this record with a grain of salt since recording technology was much less sophisticated back then, and this sounds like it was a collection of individual singles gathered together rather than a fully-realized album. That said, while the songs themselves are all fun old skool boogie woogie, there's a bit of a "sameness" to all the tracks. Richard definitely had a formula - a great one, but still sounds a little bland put one after the other. The backing band in these individual tracks all tend to sound pretty much the same. For some of the cuts, it sounds like Richard singing (and a little bit of piano) recorded over the same basic backing music. Richard himself is an incredible personality with a magnificent voice which rises above these flaw, though. Definitely one of the greatest vocal talents and personalities of early rock & roll.

Hunky Dory by David Bowie

I just listened to Station to Station the other day and it's amazing to hear how far Bowie's music & style evolved in just five years. In fact, it struck me just how much influence that the "Sgt Pepper" era Beatles seems to have had on Bowie. A lot of the songs here could have been Beatles songs. He even sings a little bit like John Lennon. "Changes" sticks out because for at least part of it, he sings in the deeper vocal range that I tend to associate with Bowie.

Lady Soul by Aretha Franklin
Sep 05 2026

You can't go wrong with some Lady Soul. Apart from the obvious killer tracks [Chain of Fools , (You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman], I'd say the best tracks is Come Back, Baby.

Arrival by ABBA

Catchy fun music. Fun stuff. What more needs to be said?

Spiderland by Slint

Thank you, no. This is not for me. I can handle bleak and dirge-like. Repetitive I cannot. And every song here is the same slow noodling.
