1001 Albums Summary

look these dudes have some fucking talent but good this album goes absolutely nowhere while nothing interesting. 1* feels generous.

MMLP is a technical phenomenon undercut by content that is impossible for me to defend. Stan is a masterpiece. It's storytelling and the escalating weight of the story are magnificent, right through to the tragic end. Elsewhere though, Kim and Kill You aren't edgy. They're rehearsed violence against women played dead straight. The "Slim Shady is Satire" defence is weak. Satire only truly works if the audience gets the distance, and plenty have failed to understand the nuance in the character. True satire doesn't punch down against the already oppressed. It punches up against power regardless of consequences. It gets 3*, because musically this is a landmark record in Hip-Hop that most records will fail to surpass. Ethically, it's not something I can give the absolute seal of approval to.

Not a lot to say. BB King had a hell of a voice, it this music ain't for me.

I've never been the biggest Hole fan. Celebrity Skin is good. Live Through This makes you happy you were able to. Violet is okay as an opening track, but it's almost entirely downhill from there. 'She Walks On Me' is a very slight improvement on some of the songs around it, but for the most part this is a miserable experience.

She's got a great voice. It's not for me.

I like Blur; at least I thought I did. "Beetlebum" is a great opening track while "Song 2"'s pointed jabs at grunge is a unironically a brilliant song. "On Your Own", "You're So Great" and "Death of a Party" are reasonably decent songs on what is otherwise a surprisingly shit album; "Look Inside America" is woeful, as are the penultimate and final tracks "Movin' On" and "Essex Dogs". I expected this to be an easy 3*. The back end of the album is fucking awful though. Would rather pluck bollock hairs of an evening, than listen to most of this again.
