1001 Albums Summary

I didn't realize this album had such long songs and so many of the hit songs are actually joined together on the album. I appreciate that ambition from it. I think there's plenty to like here for this well done album, but I just don't like the palette. I'm not a pop punk guy, and this feels like the safest poppy version of it. Not a lot of particularly interesting or inspired choices from what I can hear. The ambition from the album comes from the length of the songs and willingness to be more grand and big sound rather than leaning into an angry punk edge. I wasn't paying super active attention while listening, and I don't feel like I missed out.

What a pleasant surprise. I was initially put off by this album when I listened to some clips of it in my headphones, but I put it on in the car and it was a blissful psychedelic, jangle pop trip. It was sonically interesting a lot of the time, the guitar was great, it was sometimes old-time nostalgic, sometimes very 80s, and sometimes psychedelic in a way that was timeless. Plenty of variety in the songs too. I need to relisten to this one, and I can see it growing on me more.

I have a feeling this will be just about my favorite Black Sabbath album, but I still didn't love it. I think the riffs are good, the vocals are good, and there are some great guitar solos and flourishes. I liked how dyamic the songs could be. Still, I feel like I'm missing something. This music feels so simple and not that exciting. I swear Black Sabbath has this reputation of being an insane drugs and partying band, their music sounds EVIL, and "wow, it's so heavy!". Instead, I found a pretty normal sounding album that didn't really push me out of my comfort zone or get me hyped up. It certainly has its moments, and it's well crafted but I don't feel a need to revisit.
