Pearl by Janis Joplin

This is gonna be my first blues album I've listened to in full. I'm not sure what I am expecting. I am hoping it's not some pretentious prog-rock BS that insists upon itself. Track 1: Move Over. Wow. I am already catching onto this album from the first track. The vocals especially are really getting me going. And the instrumental portion I'm hearing as I write this is fucking awesome. Overall a very good opening track. 9/10 Track 2: Cry Baby. WHERE HAVE I HEARD THIS SONG BEFORE!? I know that fucking chorus! I need to find out where I heard this before. Apart from that it's a relative step down from track 1. Even with the amazing outro I feel like I would prefer listening to Move Over 9 times out of 10. 7/10 Track 3: A Woman Left Lonely. I don't have much to say. The vocals be vocaling. The pianos be pianoing. The organs be organing. I just feel like something is missing here and I can't put my finger on it. Also the piano sounds like it's about to go into the Gracie Films logo jingle at times. 5/10 Track 4: Half Moon. Ooohhh this song is funky! I really prefer this song over A Woman or even Cry Baby for that matter. And that instrumental portion again my GOD. This song wants to make me boogie! The vocals bring the same vibe as a preacher especially at the end, which is fitting because I'm thanking god for showing me this album. 10/10 Track 5: Buried Alive In the Blues. Oh shit? An instrumental song? I didn't think we'd be getting one in a 10 song tracklist but here we are. The guitars are rocking harder than most rock albums I've heard from this time and combined with the Honky-Tonk pianos and organs, I am loving this album so far. 8/10 Track 6: My Baby. Another step-down on the album for me. But I think this one is needed. After a genuine 10/10 and one of the best instrumental songs I've heard, I believe this album needed a cooldown. 6/10 Track 7: Me and Bobby McGee. Not sure why this is the most popular song on the album especially since other tracks like Half Moon and Move Over have more emotional vocal performances and outstanding instrumentation. In my opinion this is my least favourite song on the album so far. 5/10 Track 8: Mercedez Benz. Wow. This is different. I ain't against it however. It's almost like an old-timey work song. It's kinda depressing that she's singing alone though, especially after she calls for everybody to sing along. Maybe this song was made for live performances? IDK. Either way I dig it. 7/10. Track 9: Trust Me. Not sure what I can say about this track that I haven't said about the others. The vocals are amazing as usual and the instrumentation reaches into my soul. Although I will say maybe the vocals sound a bit too strained this time around. She's putting too much of her jopussy into it. 7/10 Track 10: Get It While You Can. A slow closing track for an otherwise mostly fast paced album. I think it's a neat little closer. Emotional and yet catchy. Overall I was not expecting to like this album as much as I did. The slower tracks didn't really do a lot for me but Janis's vocals really carried most of the album. I'll give the album an overall 8/10

2112 by Rush

Oh boy here we go. As I mentioned in my previous album review I am not a fan of “Pretentious Prog Rock”. I was never the biggest fan of bands like Pink Floyd or King Crimson. I mainly listen to Hip-Hop and Electronic with occasional splashes of Pop and more accessible rock genres like Indie and Pop Rock. But I might as well rip the bandaid off now. Let’s see if I’ll catch the Rush Rash or something, IDFK. Let’s just get this over with. Track 1 pt. 1: 2112: Overture. Oh god it’s a 20 minute suite to start off. I am not looking forward to this album. I’ve already forgotten the intro. 3/10 Track 1 pt. 2: The Temples Of Syrinx. Okay, okay. I see what you’re cooking up. I actually don’t hate this track. It’s catchy and energetic. 7/10 Track 1 pt. 3: Discovery. I wish I was listening to Daft Punk’s Discovery over this so far. I just do not like this track. It’s putting me to fucking sleep. 2/10 Track 1 pt. 4: Presentation. That’s one way to wake me up at least. This album is putting me through a rollercoaster so far with ups and downs. The calm singing with acoustic production in one portion perfectly contrasts the shouting vocals and electrified guitars the next. And the ending picks up the pace I didn’t even know could be picked up. 9/10 Track 1 pt. 5: Oracle. I thought this was gonna be another down with the dreamy production yet again but the second half of this track really woke me up again. I’m not the biggest fan of the guitars on the vocals but eh. That’s probably just a me thing. 6/10 Track 1 pt. 6: Soliloquy. Holy guitar solo. 8/10 Track 1 pt. 7: Grand Finale. If there’s one thing I love about rock performances, it’s the breakdowns at the end of songs. If you need an example just check any live performance of Primus’ “Harold Of The Rocks” and while this breakdown isn’t anything close to Harold, it’s still an awesome way to finish a suite of ups and downs. 9/10. Overall for the whole suite: 6/10 Track 2: A Passage To Bangkok. Did Carmen Sandiego write this song? It’s just a stupid little song about smoking weed around the world. I pretty big deviation from the nihilistic 20 minute epic. 3/10 Track 3: The Twilight Zone. Eh? It’s a cute tribute to the show of the same name. Would this be the first ever Nerdcore song? Either way if I ever watched the show I would probably like the song more. 5/10. Track 4: Lessons. Is it okay to say I just don’t care for this song? I listened to the whole thing trying to think of something to say but I just couldn’t think of anything at all. I guess the guitar at the end is alright? 4/10 Track 5: Tears. Wow. This is probably the only song I’m keeping off this album in my playlist. A genuinely beautiful song. I did not expect this. 9/10 Track 6: Something For Nothing. This sounds very Pink Floyd-ish. Specifically something off of Animals or an energetic song on The Wall. Just chill out on the vocals (and maybe the guitars) and you got mid-era Pink Floyd. 5/10. Overall while I didn’t hate this album like I thought I would, I didn’t necessarily care for it either. The suite is too varied in quality for the good tracks to save it and the post-suite tracks range from just good to boring and forgettable…except Tears, that’s a great track. Favourite Track: Tears Least Favourite Track: Discovery Overall Rating: 5/10
